Is iPod now rendered useless?

1-I do not use any apple product other than my beloved iPod, my understanding and knowledge is very limited.

I purchased new music in the apple store, went to update my iPod and everything is gone once it is disconnected. I suspect with the new revenue generating apple music subscription has rendered my iPod, simple hook up in my old car, useless....please tell me I'm wrong!
