Maps for OS X Sonoma: how do I remove a destination from a multi-stop route?

If I set up a route like:

Home

Stop A

Stop B

Stop C

Stop D

Home

but then want to remove Stop C so it would then be

Home

Stop A

Stop B

Stop D

Home

there's an "x" next to Stop C that erases the text, but it only removes the name while leaving the field in place; more importantly, Stop C remains part of the route.

I can move destinations around, but I don't see a way to remove a destination and have Maps recalculate the route without it; trying to drag that field off the list entirely does nothing.
