Yes because obviously there is a direct correlation between the amount of posts one has a BB and the accuracy of their claims! look if someone claims they have made a big notice after a major upgrade there is no reason not to believe them.

i've got low post numbers, 2 years experience with iphones and 20 years of tech experience of all types...and the battery is easily burning 30% faster then previously with all conditions the same.

I like the idea of letting it drain 100% and starting over. although the battery claims to be draining considerably fast I may not really know if the percentage is true until I kill as it recommended monthly in the manual.

First time poster here and feel I have to speak out also about poor battery life. After updating to 3.1, I used 50% of the battery during about 3 hours of standby and am also experiencing the high usage and standby time issues. This morning I thought I would turn off some things. I have switched off the following:-
Push
Fetch to manual
Location services
Notifications
WIFI
Bluetooth (was not on previously anyway)
Calendar invitation alerts
Safari fraud warning.

I turned the phone off then back on and so far have the following stats:-
Usage/Standby 5mins/1hr14mins and I still have 100% battery. I will have to use a trial and error method by switching things back on one at a time to see what the culprit is with mine, but I'm happy that there is some progress.

Cheers, Brett

I updated to 3.1 and battery life is awful. Is Apple going to fix this
ASAP. I think the firmware updates has a "leak" and is draining
the battery. I went from 2 days to about 10 hours.

Could you enlighten us as to your rationale that someone like me with low post numbers doesn't know what they're talking about? I've worked in IT for almost 25 years, and just because I haven't bothered to type a message on a support forum 20 times a day does not mean my thoughts aren't as valid or as informed as yours.

Having said that, I am also seeing much worse battery life after the 3.1 upgrade, and after draining the battery and fully charging it again. It's going down approx. 30-40% faster than w/3.01 with no other changes. Obviously all of the suggestions to disable features or change settings are band-aids, since I don't think I should have to turn things off to get the same life as before 3.1. I'm hoping for a 3.11 update from Apple soon because this is a pain.

iPhone 3GS - 16GB
OS 3.1 latest update available
location: New York

Ladies and gents. I don't wish for these posts to inevedably turn into a flame thread that has to get locked because of bickering. We should return to the subject.

Now. First off. Anyone who does NOT have a 3GS iPhone with 3.1 installed shouldn't even be regarding to or being a part of this thread. Reading 9 pages of posts it is clear that the update I mentioned earlier is the culprit to our problems. Apple clearly knows that there is a problem they did not forsee in this new updated OS for it's 3GS users.

Let's do this again only this time let's FIRST start by posting your phone modal info followed by the OS version and your state name for location purposes just in case apple needs that. The idea here is get apples attention as to the situation which I am plenty sure they already are aware of.

The problems: battery dranage is approx 30-40% more as a constant more then normal average usage on previous OS 3.0.1. The back of the phone is considerably hotter then ever before with this new update as well regardless of what apple claims to do to correct this issue as to gaining more battery life or restores. Restoring or even starting completely from a scratch fresh install as I did with no sync or restore following the problems continues to persist. Ironically the battery drains at almost the same rate just a bit less while in standby mode regarless of every feature being turned on or off. Clearly this is something happeneing in the backround.

Apple. This is a post to you directly to the CS dept. This issue needs to be addressed immediately. In the mean time I emplore someone from apple to post exact specific instruction on how to revert to 3.0.1 OS in whatever way possible. Until you rerelease the corrected update for that we can upgrade again.

Let's get on the same page people. Let's not squander over things that have no concern to this thread.

Update:-

iPhone 3GS 16Gb
OS ver 3.1

Push is now enabled. Here are the stats:-

0830 Usage/Standby - 5mins/1hr14mins. Battery at 100% (Push OFF)
1030 Usage/Standby - 23mins/2hrs14mins. Battery at 99% (Push OFF)
1140 Usage/Standby - 55mins/3hrs13mins. Battery at 88% (Push ON)

So in roughly 1 hour from my previous post, I have dropped roughly 10% of battery charge. This would indicate to me that Push is causing the battery drain in my situation. 2 hours used 1% of battery with Push turned off and then when I turned Push on, 1 hour has consumed 10%. Usage statistics are also becoming higher despite not using the phone. The phone is also running slightly warmer now with Push turned on.

Well said.

iPhone 3GS - 32 GB - Black. Acquired early July
OS 3.1
Exchange server (2003) account - on push
IMAP (from an exchange 2007 account) - on fetch
MobileMe account (and calendars) - on push
Locale: Southern California

Reasonable battery life until 3.1 update on Wednesday. Post update, enabling Push on Exchange causes warm unit and extremely short battery life - about 4 hours on standby. Pre-update, about 14 hours of reasonable use and standby of battery life.

1230 Usage/Standby - 1hr47mins/4hrs4mins. Battery at 68% (Push ON)

That's another 20% drop in battery reserve after only another 50 mins of being turned on. The phone has not been used since the last update. The rate of decline of the battery seems to be increasing. I am now going to turn Push back off and will see if battery life stablises.

Cheers, Brett

I have had the exact same problem after downloading the 3.1 update. My phone was getting abnormally hot and the battery was draining very quickly - almost to the point where charging it would only hold it at its current battery level. I had to turn it off completely to get it charged.

Following advice on a different forum, I completely deleted my exchange email account (noting down the settings first), rebooted the phone, and then reinstalled my email. It now works fine. Might not resolve it for everyone, but it did for me.

Definitely seems like push is the issue. Hopefully Apple can fix this quickly, thankfully I'm no longer having issues with my phone.

Despite all these reports of problems, I upgraded to 3.1 this morning, and fortunately do not appear to have the battery problem many of you are encountering. It's too soon for me to be 100% sure, but considering how dramatic you guys are reporting it, I'm fairly sure I've got about the same battery life. Maybe even slightly better if I'm lucky.

It's possible it's because of the way I upgraded: from 3.0.1, I downloaded (but did not install) 3.1. Then, I selected RESTORE, as a new phone. It automatically jumped to installing 3.1 instead of re-installing 3.0.1.

I did have the problem with none of my 3rd party apps work, but fortunately the quick 'download a free app' fix worked for me.

So, here are my rough stats. I'm sorry, I was running errands and didn't really get hard numbers here. I did start with 100% charge:

  • Bluetooth enabled (listening to music or strreaming radio via an app for approximiately 3 to 3 1/2 hours)
  • Push enabled (receiving updates of the 49er/Cardinals game from Sportacular)
  • 2 emails on fetch every 30 minutes
  • 3G enabled about 3 of the 4 hours.
  • No phone calls, but sporadic periods of using the iPhone (opening and closing various streaming radio apps, checking for app updates, downloading an app, switching play lists, etc.)
  • Location - Northern California

After what was probably just over 4 hours, I had about 45% charge left. I could be wrong, but that seems normal. I used the bluetooth heavily last week at work (almost constantly for hours, without the 3G and push, though), and I'd be around or below 50% after 3 or 4 hours; that was with sending a lot of emails, though.

1340 Usage/Standby - 1hr54mins/5hrs21mins. Battery at 68% (Push OFF)

I've had Push switched off for an hour and the battery has remained at 68%(has not dropped in 1 hour). The phone is also running nice and cool. No doubt now that Push is screwing with things.

As a test, I might delete my Exchange account from the phone and reset it up.

Cheers, Brett

1700 Usage/Standby - 3hr9mins/8hrs35mins. Battery at 64% (Push OFF)

Over the last few hours I've turned back on Fetch for my exchange server, location services, notifications, wifi. Everything is pretty much back on with the exception of Push and battery life is great. You can see it's only dropping at a rate of 1-2% per hour.

I contacted Apple support and they said that they have not heard of any battery drain issues with the 3.1 update. They recommended a restore to new rather than a restore from a backup. They also said to power cycle the battery 3 times. I honestly cant see this making any difference though.

Cheers, Brett
