applemtp.sys causes blue screen in Win XP
Posted: Jun 30, 2009 10:33 AM

Hi,

My multitouch driver continues to cause blue screens in Win XP, despite installing the latest posted update:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Multi_Touch_Trackpad_Update_for_Windows_XP___Vista

It seems to be particularly associated with playing videos or DVDs (and similar, e.g., Picasa always caused until I no longer associated movie file types with Picasa).

I have confirmed I have the updated 2.1.2.100 version of applemtp.sys
Anyone else having similar problems? Is there a workaround, other than disabling the multitouch trackpad?

R

The same for me: installed yesterday the so called fix, already got a BSOD...
I wonder if they test the product they release. So let's wait for another 6 months. And then... P

Well, its pretty pathetic - I continue to get 2 or 3 BSODs per day, doing things like scrolling in Picasa or double-clicking Firefox.

My workaround: disable the Apple Multitouch Mouse (not Apple Multitouch) in Device Manager. This removes all multitouch functionality from the touchpad - it just can move the mouse and click or double click. Thenrun this little app to allow Ctrl clicking to access context menus. Scrolling, etc. all done with shortcut keys.

Scratch that. Several more BSsOD even with the Apple Multitouch Mouse disabled.

Boy do I enjoy this auto-discussion... for those that bother to read this far, a functional work around is:

My workaround: disable the Apple Multitouch (not Apple Multitouch Mouse) in Device Manager, and then restart (the trackpad stops working entirely when first disabled, but is resurected without multitouch capabilities upon reboot).

This removes all multitouch functionality from the touchpad - it just can move the mouse and click or double click. Then run this little app to allow Ctrl clicking to access context menus. Scrolling, etc. all done with shortcut keys.

I'm installing the new Bootcamp 3.0 drivers that come with Snow Leopard (10.6) today, and I'll see if the trackpad driver fixes this problem.

Apple states in the FAQ for Bootcamp 3.0:

Improved tap-to-click support - The ability to tap the trackpad to click the mouse button is now supported on all Mac portables that run Boot Camp.

Any Luck with the above issue, since your update? I'm having trouble now myself.
