At least it's only occasional and relatively rare, that makes it tolerable....

Hi all,
just a short update about my MacBook Pro problems. The german applecare guys called me yesterday and told me that i will get a new machine (or they could repair mine). It seems that apple find the problem regarding the monitor brightness noise and told me that some (ok let’s say a lot) of the early machines have this hardware defect. The fan issue should also be fixed(?!) with the new machine.
Let’s see if the macbook pro dream come true ...
Cheers,
Mortel

Update: it appears that my MacBook Pro also has the fan-starting issue. When the computer runs hot -- and it does so when I leave the adapter connected after being fully charged -- the right fan tries to start up, without succeeding. The result is a sound described by some as the 'mooing' of a distant cow. I am worried though that the real problem is not the sound, but the computer running hot. When the fan tries to start, it is actually so hot I can barely touch it.

Could you guys with noises on your computers post the first 5 digits of your serial numbers to see if there's any pattern as to the dates of manufacture?
I have what I consider a noiseless MBP and my serial is: W8610XXXXX
W8 is the factory code - 6 is the year - 10 is the week of manufacture.
Thanks

Hi tribe,
very interesting!
I still have the right fan noise - on, off, on, off,...
My serial number is: W8607XXXXX.
Using your decoding scheme: same factory, earlier built.
In the meanwhile I have asked Apple for a replacement,
which is due in about two weeks. I'll keep you guys posted.
Kind regards,
Thorsten.

Anyone with suggestions/info on whether or not the buzz related to screen brightness (inverter board) will get worse if not corrected? How loud does it need to be before they will replace it?

Very cool!
This is exactly the kind of research that I'd expect to be done by Apple.
So far it seems that all our noisy MBPs were produced during the same production week.
No sign of my new MBP yet...
Cheers, Thorsten.

No idea, but...
How loud does it

... Apple Care did not ask me many questions. They connected me with their post-sale department, who were really friendly and helpful. Mind you, I am talking about Apple Care Germany.
I don't know, if you guys have the same, but over here in Germany there is a customer protection, that allows you to return your purchase within two weeks, no matter what. You're unhappy, you return.
What's the situation in the US? You guys've got anything similar?
Cheers, Thorsten.

The Apple people I spoke to from The Netherlands were really helpful and friendly too. Actually my MBP also has a defective right speaker (distortion) and that in itself was enough to be offered either a refund or a new MBP. There's even an arrangement that lets you keep the 'old' MBP until the new one arrives (on or before April 17 in my case).
Taking into account that new models are always susceptible to this kind of issues, I am very pleased with the way Apple handles it.
We have the same kind of customer protection legislation in The Netherlands.

I have the W8610XXXXXX macbook and it has the noise. This is my 3rd replacement book. I went to the store 2 days ago, and I had the genius hear the problem, and he said that was not usual so he went back to get a new one for me. Well, the new ones had the sound, we went through probably 4 books, and they all had the whining sound. I ended up just picking the one that had the least noise.
