Has there been any further information made available on this building block? I'm also checking our Bb contacts, but this is certainly an attractive option for us as well.

Thanks for any info.

received this from Bb.

"Currently there are no building blocks from Blackboard that integrate with iTunes U. There are building blocks for podcasts however none specifically for iTunes U. through Blackboard at this time nor are any currently in development."

Is there anything new from the one school that had something working? Are you able to share the code for this particular fucntionality?

Thanks for the posting the information from Bb. I guess it brings us all back to the question, does anyone have a building block for Bb that they would be interested in sharing?

I was able to get a copy of the Building Block that Aaron Baird at Baker College created, and I just got it installed, set up, and tested, and it works great! I also got permission from the folks at Baker College to redistribute it under the GPL license, so I put it online and you can download it from http://www.nku.edu/~ringeys1/iTunesU.war

There’s a little bit of set up involved that should be mostly self-explanatory. Also, the page that it returns when you click the iTunes U link in Bb contains a hidden iframe--we found that unhiding it made the link work with the Safari browser. All I had to do to get iTunes U to work with the building block was to create these two credentials at the top level of the site (obviously replace "nku.edu" with your site name):

INSTRUCTOR@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:nku.edu:${identifier}
STUDENT@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:nku.edu:${identifier}

Give the INSTRUCTOR credential Edit access, and the STUDENT credential Download access. Then for each course you create on iTunes U, enter that course’s Blackboard "Course ID" as the Identifier, and the instructor and students will automatically have the appropriate access. Note that iTunes is case sensitive, so make sure you use the exact capitalization from the Course ID for the Identifier.

Good luck! If you have any specific questions about setting this up, feel free to email me at ringeys1@nku.edu.

Works great on our setup here as well!

One note... it's {INEDTIFIER}, not {identifier} !

Would this work in Blackboard Learning System (WebCT 6)? If so, how do you install the WAR file?

PS Just got back from the central region iTunes U workshop, which went rather well; I'd recommend it if you get a chance to go to a regional workshop, if not just to see what others are doing in your area!

I haven't seen of any of these in the northeast, but now I'll have keep an eye out for one. Where did you hear about the one you attended?

We have this up, but not working on a Blackboard 6.3 installation. The tool link that the plug-in allows us to create on a course menu allows the iTunes system administrator to log in, but th einstructor and students in the course do not get in.

It seems to us that we are not passing the identity and credentials to iTunes.

Talk to either your Apple AE or SE. It looks like the local AEs/SEs get together to schedule these things. At the Chicago event, we had two AEs show (my buddies Ty Beckmann and Jack McLaughlin) as well as three SEs (Mike Miley, Bill Duff, and Keith Moutin). Free lunch and a good time was had by all. :)

Bb 6.3 is what we are using. Do you have the correct credentials set up in your iTunes U courses? If so, it is possible to check what credentials are being passed to iTunes U from Blackboard. Here's how I do it (using Firefox):

First, we modified the html in the building block so the page that is generated when a user clicks the link to launch iTunes U, the "hidden" iframe in the page is made visible (I didn't set up this part). Now when I click the iTunes U link in a Bb course, I can right-click in the frame that displays "OK The page you requested was opened in iTunes, and you can close this window." Click "This Frame > View Frame Info" and then copy the entire Referring URL from the Frame Info box. Paste that URL somewhere and you can see exactly what credential info is passed to iTunes U.

(The URL is hard to read because all the special characters are encoded. I use the tool at the bottom of the page at http://www.blooberry.com/indexdot/html/topics/urlencoding.htm to convert it to something more readable.)

In case anyone isn't clear on how to set up the identifier-based credentials to work with the Bb building block, here's some more info that may help:

Using "identifier-based credentials" means you won't have to add credentials on a course-by-course basis. You'll just add two credentials site-wide by going to your main iTunes U storefront and clicking Edit Access. Add a credential for instructors (give it Edit access) and another for students (with Download access). My site's credentials look like INSTRUCTOR@urn:mace:itunesu.com:sites:nku.edu:${IDENTIFIER}. Yours should be the same, just replace nku.edu with your school's iTunes U account name.

Now for each course you create on iTunes U, enter the exact Blackboard course ID (case sensitive) for the Identifier. The Bb course ID can be found at the top of the course's control panel or by searching for the course in Bb under the Courses tab (at least that's how it works with my school's Bb setup). It shouldn't be necessary to create any credentials for an individual course. When someone clicks the link in the Bb course to launch iTunes U, the building block will pass along the course IDs for the courses they are enrolled in along with their role in the course (either student or instructor). The identifier-based credentials you set up will automatically provide them the appropriate level of access for each course.
