Ah, 12 hours. And to think I was hopeful!

Been on hold for 20 minutes with the "activation line" referenced in the email that talks about when my number would be ported.

12 hours of waiting and still no activation... Anyone who thinks Cingular customers get preferential treatment is mistaken. I've been a Cingular customer for 8 years now. I love how AT&T has not put any update on their website about the long activation wait times, but was able to pull the activation support phone number off itunes. For anyone who would like to beat their head against a wall, the activation phone number is 1-877-419-4500. Of course, now it is perpetually "busy". I'm going to give it 24hrs then I'm going to take my "ibrick" back to the Apple Store.

I am very sorry so many people are having problems. I activated mine at around 9:30 pm Eastern and it took about two minutes.

Give AT&T a little slack... I've been with them for 7 years and have had nothing but good experience with them.

Same problem. Got mine last night and tried to sync it at about 8 pm. Now, more than 12 hours later, still no promised email telling me I can activate my phone!

Yes - 10 HOURS and counting. I just sent an email to the NYT. This is major BS. Like having and Apple product operated by DELL.

Perhaps AT&T Needs More Time to Tap the Phones Before Activating?
Posted: Jun 30, 2007 5:53 AM   in response to: Sean Moody

Bought my 8GB iPhone from an AT&T store Friday evening and was home by 7:30 p.m. to activate it through iTunes. It's now Saturday morning with no such luck. It's been more than 10 hours since iTunes warned me that "Your activation requires additional time to complete." I called the toll-free iPhone activation number displayed at the bottom of the original iTunes message and was told a "backlog" at AT&T and a "delay" from Verizon were the culprits, though the latter should NOT affect the ability to complete activation (the latter should only affect porting over of my number from Verizon).

The phone rep wouldn't say when the email to activate my phone would arrive, but she did say their backlog was two hours earlier in the day on Friday and about four hours at the time of my call (about 9:30 p.m. PDT). I didn't expect the phone to live up to all the hype, but I did hope AT&T and Apple might have planned better.

In other forums, several people are stating AT&T reps claimed that the backed up emails are Apple's fault because Apple needs to generate a code for the iPhone to make it active. Maybe a group of activations got hosed in transit from one system to another. Who knows? None of us have received emails from either AT&T or Apple stating, "We're sorry, but due to blah blah blah your new iPhone will remain a $648.42 paperweight for a while longer while we yadda yadda yadda.

I'm losing my objectivity and patience without more information here. Even the toll-free iPhone activation support number now seems to be gone from the iTunes "Completing Activation" page. Next to having my calls tapped illegally, this has got to be the worst introduction to a new service I can imagine for someone usually thrilled with Apple but often leery of AT&T.

One thing is certain: I'll be asking for a refund on the $36 activation fee.

Well, I'm in the hotel business, and when we have a crisis like this, EVERY manager from every department is expected to help. Apple and ATT execs better come back from the golf courses and help get this thing going!

No, AT&T deserves no slack at all... your suggestion is unacceptable. I realize that problems obviously can arise, but this has been beyond mishandled. Phone support hid their telephone number when trouble began, they went home and an "emergency shift" wasn't ordered to come to work to man the phones (depending on which of several numbers you call), and I have no phone service at all.

That last part is the real kicker. I just got off the phone after waiting for an HOUR, and was told "sorry, there is nothing we can do."

Absolutely pathetic. No excuses will ever remedy this.

I am in South Carolina. activated mine at 6:25EST yesterday and still not activated as of now (over 13 hours). I am an existing Cingular customer and not doing a port. Funny thing, my wife's phone activated last night and we are on the same family plan.

Re: Your Activation Requires Additional Time to Complete - 3G???

It's 8:53 Eastern and I've been waiting since about midnight like many of you. I took out the SIM card and was about to put it into my old Sony Ericsson but then I noticed something peculiar, it has a blatantly obvious flaming 3G label on it!? Has anyone else found this? What does this mean?

Also, is it better to contact ATT&T or Apple to check if we've made mistakes (like entering a "-"), and at what number?

'preciate the help guys, we're all in the same boat and I hope this starts working for all of us soon

Getting the iPhone was easy. Getting it to work, however has been more of a Microsoft type experience.

I walked right into the flagship 5th Avenue Apple store last night at 10PM to the still roaring cheers of employees lined up at the entrance.

As I marched down the shiny spiral staircase, the view of the crowds reminded me of Moses's descent from Mt. Zion, masses of people welcoming me, while at the same time occupied with their own business of conducting their iLifes. I was ushered like a movie star into the iPhone line corral, which had about 5 people in it and in less than 2 minutes flat, my Green Amex card was being silently swiped and I was handed a bag with what looked like a small box of very expensive cologne inside.

I had been "gifted" the most coveted tech prize at all and could hardly contain my excitement as I rushed into the round glass elevator full of other devotees with their little black bags. Walking out it felt like I had won the marathon - more cheering and adoring fans. "Where was the champagne", I asked myself?

I hopped on my bike and rode home to the Upper upper west side and in seconds flat had the bag and it's contents opened, eager to inspect the candy inside.

I was not disappointed - the phone, and it's packaging are a model of Apple simplicity and style, well worthy of all the hype and upholding the companies tradition of doing things right that sings a compelling song to my organizational heart. The packaging is minimal and there are no instructions to speak of. The phone told me to connect to iTunes for set up, which I already knew having seen the video on Apple's website. After a small bit of frustration with nothing happening, I decided to check for updates and realized my iTunes wasn't the latest version, so I downloaded that version (again with classic Apple ease and simplicity) and re-started iTunes.

This time, my phone was recognized and I was prompted to set up my new AT&T account. "Hooray", I shrieked, eager to have the phone up and running so I could show it off to a friend who was stopping by any minute now.

Almost 12 hours later, I am still waiting, the "Your Activation Requires Additional Time To Complete" message still taunting me when I open iTunes. I guess you could call it the Hangover. I woke up at 2AM and when I was still greeted by the annoying, sorry you'll still have to wait message, decided to call the customer service number on the screen. After an 8 minute wait on hold, I was told by the very nice AT&T lady that I would just have to wait until I got said email.

Again, I am still waiting. I imagine there are tens of thousands of us still waiting. AT&T couldn't hold up their part of the bargain and must have been overwhelmed by the desire to create new accounts. The thing that baffles me and I find somewhat amusing at the same time is, why did the part that involves human beings (going to store, waiting in line, having credit card and other information exchanged and then getting the phone, take less than 5 minutes, while the supposedly automated part, signing up for service take 10 hours and counting? Is this what one can expect from AT&T? Should I really be dropping my Verizon service?

I'm baffled. I'm annoyed. I'm feeling like I bought an Apple product, operated by Dell.

One AT&T rep I spoke with last night readily agreed to waive the $36 activation fee for me. We'll see, I guess. It appears they'll say anything.

the phone isn't living up to anything at the moment for a vast number of customers. It's just one of the most expensive paper weights a person could buy. It was dumb to require service to unlock the phone. I wouldn't be as mad if I cold use the ipod features and get my phone book setup while I wait
