iPod Touch date/time sync problems
Posted: Sep 23, 2007 10:34 AM

Has anyone else had this problem? Normally my Touch works great. Week 37 unit and the screen seems fine. But a few times when I sync it (normally when I'm in a hurry and don't check of course) it gets the date and time all futzed up, this really messes up my smart playlists, as I have a podcast playlist set to only who podcasts added in the last week, and if the iPod thinks that it's 9 months ago... well, it doesn't seem to go well.

Just wondering if anyone else had this problem and if so can it be fixed? Is it an iTunes thing or an iPod thing?

I had similar problems tonight, the date and time kept getting messed up. Also the dock connector seemed very touchy, kept connecting and disconnecting. I rebooted my pc and got one successful sync without the time & date being messed up. I'm afraid to try it again!
My ipod is a week 38 that I just got on Monday.

Everyone is having this problem. It has to do with power to the USB ports I believe. I am going to the MAC store to talk to an applegenuis, I will have the answer by the end of the day and I will let everyone know if I get any help.

I am having this problem too. I have a week 37. Some times when I sync, the clock/date stays correct. Most times it goes to some random time yesterday.

No, not everyone is having this problem. I have not. Only issue I've had is slightly slower syncing than other iPods.

So, I MAY have pinned it down to something unexpected. I'm going to leave it unanswered for a few more days and see if it really is solved, then I'll mark it answered.

The machine I am syncing to is a Dell Precision M90 laptop. I was thinking hard about exactly what the common factor was in the syncs that messed it up and different in the syncs that worked: Hibernate/Standby. Not of the iPod but the computer.

If I leave iTunes open when I send the computer to standby, then wake it up and sync the iPod, it seems more likely to screw up. If I close iTunes and then reopen it to sync, it seems to work fine. Even if I've left iTunes open when I suspend the system, as long as I close it and reopen it before I sync, I seem to be good. I've been trying this for a couple of days now and it hasn't blown up yet.

For safety's sake, it seems that the best thing to do is to only sync with a freshly opened iTunes.

All of which begs the question: Why does iTunes really care about the date and time... unless... Naw, I'm not going to contribute to the rumors.

Well, at least one reason iTunes cares about the date and time is so that it can accurately tag songs with the Last Played date. Some of us use this information in making smart playlists.

Good job. I have a Dell laptop as well and usually have it hibernating and that's what seemed to have caused the mischief with my IPT clock. Just make sure iTunes is closed before you connect your IPT to it, connect the IPT, and then open iTunes. No more clock trouble. Hopefully they'll fix this issue in the near future so I dont have to worry about making sure the app is closed.

time problem fixed!!! Re: iPod Touch date/time sync problems

The problem I was having was whenever I would plug the Itouch into my computer the time would jump 1 hour ahead. I went into my time settings and you need to ensure that the box for daylight savings time is checked. Once I checked this box, everything was fine. I even called Apple and they helped me for free but I guess I really didn't need there help if I would've just played around with the options more.

I had the date/time screwing up as well on synch and I tried with a newly opened iTunes and it worked, keeping the date and time current instead of years off. Great catch.

I usually just put my laptop to sleep with everything open (including iTunes). So is this an iTunes issue?

Also, how do you guys tell what "week" build your touch is and why's that matter?

Thanks!

Just double click your time on the bottom right hand corner (Windows xp).
Then open the tab for TIME ZONE then you will see a box that says AUTOMATICALLY ADJUST CLOCK FOR DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME, check this box, then unplug your Itouch and replug it back in and the time changing problem should be fixed.

Hi there,

I was having the same problem and couldn't find the daylight savings option either. Some of the timezones don't show the option. (Eastern - Indiana, for example) If you're in Indiana, you can select Eastern time, adjust your clock and turn off the checkbox.

I'm still having my time advance by 1 hour even after enabling the Daylight Savings settings on both my iPhone and the PC I am syncing with.

This is absolutely the most annoying bug I have ever had to deal with, its ruining my schedule.

Is there no fix for this? I'm sorry to sound angry but this was never a problem until this week, and now I find myself asking why in the world iTunes needs to syng my iPhone's time if I already have my phone set to automatically sync through my carrier.

I don't wear a watch and have always used my cellphones to tell time. If this iPhone can't even do that right I'm going back to my Moto/Blackberry combo just like Woz...

I already tried removing and adding the check to daylight saving times (or whatever it says) and it doesn't do a thing to the ipod. it still goes back one hour everytime i sync it with itunes.

I tried changing the time zone (it is by default on cupertino) but there's no timezone for my country.. (***??) the only way I could fix this is if there would actualy be a time zone matching mine but I cannot think of any place that has the same timezone as Monterrey, Mexico.

I switched it to San Antonio, Texas (closest i could find) but san antonio is +1 hour from where I am now so now the ipod started going up one hour every time I synched instead of back one hour.

what the heck is this bug? why can't i just click a little check that says "don't mess with my time i'll set it manualy"
