I am also having this issue - and nothing suggested here short of full iPhone replacement - solves the issue. This thread is incorrectly categorized as solved.

The only way I can get the iPhone to recognize a WiFi connection is to re-boot it. This device should not require multiple reboots in one day to see WiFi networks. Battery usage and device temperature are also now a problem. Again, as other users have noted, this became an issue with 1.1.1 and appears to be a bug.

same here. PRior to the latest update, Id get 20 hours or so of standby, and 5-6 hours of usage. With the update, I now get less than 10 hours of standby, and less than 4 hours of usage.

I hope Apple has a fix for this. This is the THIRD iphone for me, if I end up getting it replaced with another one Im through with this device until the 2nd generation comes along.

Well, as I did with the 1.0.2 update, I tried a trick with this 1.1.1 update...

I drained the battery all the way down till the phone died, then plugged it in to my USB brick, and let it charge all the way up. I will use today, and let this thread know if there were any improvements.

Thanks, Scott K.

Same problem for me. I'm a heavy user of email and the internet but I was always able to get through the day. Now my battery is dying shortly after noon. This problem started right after the upgrade to 1.1.1

Looks like I will be making a visit to apple today

Exact same problem. I called apple, and they're having me send the phone in for repair, sent me the loaner phone (for free). I hope this fixes the issue. Maybe I should've just gone to the apple store and had them deal with it there....although I don't know if it would've been handled differently. We'll see.

I went to my local Apple retail store, and unfortunately the genius bar is by appt only, and so I have an appt to go back tonight. I charged my iPhone all night, and then turned off wifi this morning. Today I still have a full battery whereas yesterday it was dead by now. I guess I solved the issue by turning off wifi when not needed. I don't know why this changed with the update, but so far so good.

Same issue here with the battery life, but not the need to reboot to get Wi-Fi.

Called Apple support and my tech said they increased the power of the Wi-Fi chip to better receive Wi-Fi signals -- via a software update in 1.1.1 -- in order to make the iTunes store more effective and that could be what's causing batteries to drain more quickly.

So I'm either going to charge more often, shut off Wi-Fi more often, or if the problem persists, exchange the phone.

So, today my battery seems much better. All I did was let the battery completely die. Then I fully charged it and did a reset.

My timers are back to normal and my battery is lasting.

Don't know if this will help others, but it may be worth a try. Let us know.

Yes, it's quite possible that the battery is okay, but the device thinks it's lower. Or it's not fully charging, but the phone thinks it is.

In either case, recalibration by charging/ going to empty / charging again, is recommended once a month... and perhaps is a good idea after any update or restoration.

Worth a try!

Battery life seems better with the new phone, but WiFi still buggy. Please fix this Apple!

Let me add my 2 cents worth...I noticed yesterday that my iPhone was relatively hot in the upper half of the phone, and that after a few minute conversation, my battery indicator was at 3/4. This coming off a supposed full charge. I kept an eye on it all day, and by the end of the day, the batter was less than 1/2. Since i've had the iphone, the battery never gets below 3/4 and almost always shows a full battery! I figured something was wrong.

Last night, I had dinner with friends, one of whom bought her iphone the same day I did. She mentioned her battery was going bad because it drains the battery so fast, and was going to the apple store to get a replacement.

Then, today, I read about all these other people having issues since the 1.1.1 update. Methinks there is a serious problem with 1.1.1.

I'm currently charging with the dock plugged into the USB port of my PC, and charging is taking forever. I might switch to the USB AC adapter to see if I can get it to charge faster.

I have found that if you turn on WiFi (in Settings) and you still see the "E", switch to Airplane mode On then Off again. Phone seems to pick up WiFi connection first.

Since updating my iPhone to version 1.1.1 I have also been having numerous problems with WiFi networks that were not present in the previous version of the firmware.

1. When I leave the range of my home network (Airport Express) and return later on, the iPhone is no longer able to acquire an IP address from the router. The WiFi control panel indicates that it is connected, but the EDGE icon in the status bar does not change into a WiFi icon. Turning WiFi on and off does not help, nor does toggling Airplane mode on/off. Telling the iPhone to "forget this network" does not help. The only solution I've come across so far is to power the iPhone off and restart, at which point it can reconnect to the network successfully.

2. The iPhone has locked up and overheated 2 or 3 times since applying the 1.1.1 update, happening only when WiFi is enabled, and requiring a forced restart to become usable again.

3. May or may not be related to the other WiFi problems: battery life appears to be significantly reduced since installing firmware version 1.1.1. Previously I could easily get 2 full days of normal use, now the battery is about 70% drained after 14 hours. My relatively light usage behavior hasn't changed.
