I have exactly the same problem. Happened today while doing a presentation. Talk about embarrassing.

Yes this is annoying but everyone must call applecare. im a starving student and i have yet to save enough to get the Apple care plan however if you do have applecare call up apple let them take you through the troubleshoot then get them to get an engineer on the line. and then i guess its in the engineering departments hands

I'm having this problem as well.
It happens with my ViewSonic VG2230wm which is declared "PC and MacĀ® compatible".
It happens:
- only since I have updated to the new firmware MBP22.00A5.B07
- once every several days
- without any noticeable context: not load, nor particular program open
this is extremely disappointing

I have encountered this problem recently, and it's a major pain. The first time it happened to me was a couple of days ago, at a big presentation.
I called Apple twice. The first time they gave me the expected drill about cleaning up the state of the machine (repair disk, reset power manager and reset PRAM). They also suggested that the only way to safely connect an external display is with the machine asleep (something I've never had to do with other machines).
So, when I got time, I did the requested cleanup, and then tried using one of the projectors known to cause problems. My conclusion is that the behavior is unpredictable. I tried connecting while asleep and awake (the laptop, not me!), and when awake connecting the DVI-VGA adapter first to the laptop and then first to the projector. All scenarios produced at least one hang. Occasionally, it worked. It seems that once you have connected successfully, you can reconnect in any manner, until the machine has been power cycled (I did not have the patience to determine if rebooting alone would be sufficient). I had one success connecting the adapter to the projector first, and otherwise the failures were consistent.
I called back to report this, and the next step is they want to walk me through some diagnostics from the install disc (which I do not have time for now, and I doubt will yield anything).
If you're having the problem, please call Apple. They need to appreciate the magnitude of the problem.

I am having this problem, and have even reported a bug to Apple on it. No solution yet.

Hello,
Do you have a bug number to share, something we can refer to when contacting Apple, or simply to track the status ?
Thanks

Well i use my MBP frequently hooked up with my TV via VGA and have never had this problem, but i do have my cable hooked into to the TV before i plug it into my MBP. Just a suggestion, but it does work for me and it is not all MBP, mabye it was a certain time when you guys all bought yours like a period of a month or 2 weeks. You should all post dates and see if there is any relation. Mine is nearly brand new and bought on August 21 2007.

I also have this problem, but only when connecting to a projector that somehow automatically switches inputs from the PC desktop that it normally displays when my MBP is plugged in via a 2nd VGA cable. I have to shut down completely before doing so, or my computer is guaranteed to hard freeze. If it's helpful, I can probably get the exact projector model.
I regularly plug into other screens via VGA (in particular, a 15" Dell LCD at work) with no problems.

Hello Carter,
Looks like other posts in this thread that problem only occurs with projectors, not with externals displays

Mine was bought June 7. It seems to work fine with any external display that I have tried. I have had trouble with it locking up with some projectors and have had other projectors not even see the signal from the MBP. My experience has been strictly with Hewlett Packard projectors.

I actually have this same problem too, on a MBP Santa Rosa 2.2GHz 15". I plugged in my monitor, and it just hard froze, I had to reboot it. Meanwhile, I've used it before and sometimes it works fine.

This happens to me as well. It works fine when I connect it to my 20" Cinema Display in my dorm room, but when I disconnect the MBP and then open the lid in class, the computer needs to be restarted because it is completely frozen. I have a 2.4GHz/200GB/2GB RAM SR MBP.
