Conclusions of iPod battery draining issues

Firstly, let me explain clearly how the Classic's HD should behave under normal conditons.
1. Select Cover Flow - HD makes audible noise (high-pitched whirring sound when held close to ear) for 2/3 seconds then goes quiet.
2. Scan through covers - HD remains inaudible.
3. Choose album to play - HD audible for 2/3 seconds, then goes quiet as playback continues.
4. Press pause - HD inaudible
5. Turn off iPod - HD inaudible (obviously).
Now comes the problem. Post 1.0.2 update:
For no apparent reason, and not everytime, after choosing album to play, HD remains audible. Playback continues as normal, but battery will drain approximately 6x faster than it would otherwise.
Pressing pause - HD still audible
Turning iPod off - HD STILL AUDIBLE!
Leaving it like this will result in a fully drained battery in no time.
Workaround:
By going back a step in the menu (for me it's back to Cover Flow) - HD will once again become inaudible after 2/3 seconds. Pressing play begins playback and after 2/3 seconds the HD is inaudible. I've found that the glitch never reappears with the same album, but can appear again if another one is chosen at a later point.
It's impossible to replicate the symptoms because it defies logic. Yesterday I listened to several albums without an issue, then suddenly last night the HD's spinning again.
Below is an example of the ridiculous routine I now have to adopt in order to listen to my new, Apple, state-of-the-art, music player, and not have the battery suddenly drain on me.

Having just read this Apple article on Maximizing skip protection I'm wondering if the problem stems from a glitch in the way the iPod is using its cache. It could be that sometimes the iPod either thinks the cache is full and therefore has to run the HD continuously, or for some reason it isn't being emptied/overwritten, with the same result. My files are mostly AAC 320kbps. There should be no caching issues (and there wasn't with 1.0.1).

A Fix for the time being until Apple comes out with a new firmware upgrade would be to just not use cover flow.

Interesting thought. There could easily be a memory leak of some sort in the coverflow that causes the iPod to fill it's cashe, then start swapping. I wonder if the iPod uses some form of virtual memory.

yeah i found 90% of the problems came from using coverflow, its sound like a memory cache error, i have had it doing selecting albums from the music menu as well but no where near as much, Iam not even waiting for the fix, i was vary of buying a harddrive model anyway, my last waas a 4gb nano and worked perfectly, so tommorow im off to tescos to get the classic exchanged for the new nano which (touch wood) seems to have far less bugs.
If i was a consiracy theorist i would swear apple are trying to force every one to flash memory products. which granted is the way to go but it will be a while before we see a 80gb flash ipod.
