I have just spent an age on the phone with Apple support, 1st level and 2nd level, to discuss this issue. They were completely unaware and surprised, which may not be a surprise....
They were going to contact tech support for an update and contact me again. I hope they do.
I have an SDS150 which is on the list of supported cameras but all i can do is copy files back to the camera and then import them again. It gets fiddly and the card needs regular reformatting but it does work, although slowly.
Major PIA considering I bought this on the basis that my camera is on the supported list, so you would expect the files it produces to be supported and not just direct from the camera. When I go on holiday am I supposed to never download the files until I get home and plug into my iMac? It is a ridiculous flaw IMHO. If you have a macbook etc that you can regularly pug into on the move, or 100gb of SD cards you may be OK, but otherwise you are in trouble....
I hope this gets better when i actually geta chance to try and edit something!

mg_photo,
Try taking a USB2 flash memory card and creating a MP_ROOT folder at the root level of the card. Inside this folder create a 101PNV01 folder and put your mpg-2 files in this folder. The card should be recognized as a 'camera' by iMovie '08 and will give you access to your files.

you can create a virtual disk in the disk utility. It's work!
For me I have no audio when I connect my everio with imovie but it's work with the virtual disk... Why?

interestingly, this does work (the F Shippey suggested way to get iMovie to import). HOWEVER, the entire video is broken dow into 4 sec 'snips' - perhaps each mpeg2 frame sequence separate? This is quite annoying, as several hundred 4 sec video snips are not a bonehead editors dream come true. I can work with it, but it sure ain't easy...
Anyone else have this 'problem'? Any workarounds?
thanks

Colin -
are you sure they are separate clips or only the thumbnail views?
In iMovie 8 you have a slider on the right bottom, slide it to the right and see what happens (in case you have it on 4sec).

Thank you, thank you. You are completely correct, the 4 sec clips are thumbnail views, and the slider I did not even pay attention to adjusts the length of clip associated with each thumbnail.

Dude,
I also have a lot of Surgical MPEG2. I capture it with EyeTV 250 (ElGato). I get it directly from the S-video output of the console that receives it from the Zeiss scope.
I suggest you do that. That software (EyeTV) is by far The Best to manipulate MPEG 2, fastest, easiest & straight forward, and excellent quality. If you keep the original .eyetv file, and store it like that, then you can always re-edit, and then convert it to any format you want, easy & fast, for presentations.
Consider changing to that software for this purpose, it is the best!!!!; instead of using the video system that your hospital has.
As for your preexisting MPEG 2 files, better convert them to a good quality H.264, although the size of the file is about 1.5 times bigger. If you try the Apple TV settings, your quality is pretty good, & the file is about 70% of the original size.
The best quality and also the smallest files are generated by DivX, by far, is the best in terms of combination of quality and file size, but you might not be able to use this videos in presentations on very computer, since, it is not really standard or widespread.
