I have the same problem.

Shouldn't Apple and the phone manufacturers work toward a standard that all phones use for syncing, so that every time a new model comes out we don't have to go through the same palaver of waiting for updates etc ...?

Just a thought.

They already have done - it's called SyncML and is the industry standard for syncing data between phones and computers. It's at the heart of iSync.

However, every phone is different, has different fields for syncing and identifies itself differently to the computer.

So iSync still has to be told some information about a new phone before it can successfully talk to it.

That's where iSync's Phone Plugin framework comes in. It allows phone manufacturers (if they can be bothered) or third-parties, to create simple plugins that tell iSync how to communicate with a new device, without iSync or Mac OS X themselves being updated.

Julian,

Thanks a lot for your answer. I just hope someone somewhere WILL be bothered to make such an update for the Motorola RAZR2 V8. If someone knows about such a solution, would they please post it here. It will be much appreciated.

there is a fairly simply workaround to get at least your contacts on the v8 (as long as we wait for the next isync update): the v8 supports vcards up to 10kb, so you should be able to export your contacts from the address book in groups of about 50. just send these to your v8 via bluetooth and they are added correctly to the phonebook.

hope this helps.

Thank you very much for the tip. Saved me the trouble of entering my contact in manually.
Cheers.

I looked at www.faqintosh.com/risorse/en/othutil/isync/plugin/motorola/
where there's a plug-in for the RAZR V9m which is apparently the same phone. I still couldn't make it work. If you can, please let me know.

Unfortunately things aren't as simple as they seem - though the v8 / v9 / v9m are physically identical on the outside, the v9 series run an altered version of Motorola's older operating system whereas the v8 runs a much newer (and in my opinion swankier :p) Java / Linux platform.

Apparently this relates to the policies of at least one large US cellular carrier who have strict user interface rules.

But the upshot is that a v9 can be made to work with iSync with a simple enough hack, whereas (I would assume) our v8's (and also the z6 which uses the new platform) will require something new.

Fingers crossed its part of Leopard.

Same problem here. I love my RAZR and I love my Mac, but I'm stuffed for keeping them in sync easily. It's not great. I've even tried playing with the iSync plugin maker in Leopard, but I can't get it to work. Anyone else managed to do it yet?

Found a "temporary" trick until hopefully the phone gets handled by iSync.

1- launch the bluetooth file exchange: +shift+B
2- Select all of your contacts from your address book
3- drag and drop them on the Bluetooth icon in your dock
4- accept the transfer from your phone

You'll find all of your contacts in your phone's address book
