15" MBP sleeps on lid close, but screen is dark when I reopen it
Posted: Feb 24, 2008 3:44 PM

My 15" MBP goes to sleep just right if you use the "Apple" menu "Sleep" command; it'll wake up no problem when you touch any key on the keyboard. But when I put it to sleep by closing the lid, recently it's started greeting me with a black screen when I reopen the lid; and it won't respond to anything but holding down the power button long enough to shut it down, then turning the machine back on.

Any ideas on this? I was at the Apple store today (not the Genius bar yet) and have tried several things, but no clue so far. I reveiwed posts on these forums but don't see anyone that's posted this problem. This machine worked fine, came out of sleep normally when I first bought it; but now it does this.

Here's the symptoms again: close lid - note system is shutting off screen (appears to be going into sleep mode ok). Put in briefcase, etc (could be for as short as 2 minutes or less); then attempt to wake it up by opening screen. Screen is black, and does not respond to keyboard. Only solution: forced hard power-down and restart. It does this with no peripherals attached after a clean start - i thought it might be my external drive, monitor, etc messing up Leopard. But no luck after i factored that out by testing without anything but the AC adapter hooked up.

thanks in advance for any debug or "fix" ideas. I will definitely post what I learn by trying things, back here on this thread.

Here's an update to my question. I realized, I'm always leaving my apps open when I put my MBP to sleep. So i closed all the apps, then shut the lid. Sure enough, it wakes up fine! So it's one of the apps that's giving me trouble.

To narrow it down could be a bit of a project... I've been leaving a lot of them open. Pages, Photoshop CS3, Address Book and iCal, OmniFocus, iTunes, Aperture, Skype, Firefox, Safari, Grab, Image Capture, Spaces, Mail. My top suspects are OmniFocus (just released), and Skype (notoriously buggy clients, rare to see a completely stable one). Anyway I will start with those two and attempt to narrow it down. Suggestions for which apps are most suspect, and any improvements in methodology appreciated. I'll report back here any results.

Same problem. I want it to go to sleep when I close the lid, but it won't wake up unless I force a hard restart by holding down the power button. Annoying when you when to close the lid to put in briefcase for a few minutes to move it to a different room. Tried different settings in energy saver- currently sleep is even turned off. HELP!!!

sheepdog, have you listed what applications you have open when you shut the lid to put it into sleep mode? I am pretty sure mine problem only occurs when a certain application (or combination of apps) is open when I put it to sleep. But i haven't had time to do a "scientific" test yet, to narrow it down. If there were a command to close ALL open apps when before i shut the lid, that would help.

Sometimes mine comes on with the screen all lit up, but displaying nothing. So i have to do the power-button hard restart on that, too. Other times, the screen comes up dark, but the machine isn't off. Same result, i have to power-button-hold-down hard reset it.

I went from 15" to 17" pro a few days back, and transferred my whole environment (apps, config, etc) via the Firewire connection (they did it at the Genius Bar). That was great - but this problem seems to have come with my setup/environment. So that seems to say, it's not the hardware; it's either how I have it configured, or one of the apps.

I'll keep an eye on this thread, and if I learn anything else, I'll post it here too.

Same exact problem. I've had nothing but trouble since I bought my MBP last year. First the display was garbled and then would freeze up, and after the Geniuses fixed that, it wouldn't wake up. I've looked all over the Web and can't find anyone who has a solution. This is getting pretty old.

I started out with a lemon machine last year - bought a 17" MBP at the Apple store in Las Vegas, and ended up spending whole DAYS at the Genius bar, but they never could fix it. Even after replacing the hard disk, reformatting the drive, etc.

Just fyi, if you reach the end of your rope, you can sell a "Lemon" MBP on eBay, to sophisticated Mac types. Just photo it, write it up, and fully disclose it's ills. You may be able to get as much as 100% recovery of your purchase price, you'd be surprised. That's what I did, then I turned around and bought the latest/greatest 17" MBP. Definitely a great move!! Despite this small glitch.

One of the issues with the new Mac notebooks is something called SafeSleep. When you close the comptuer, SafeSleep which writes all the contents of the RAM to the hard drive before the machine actually goes to sleep. While it's doing this, it's recommended that you not move the machine, because this could corrupt the data being written or cause data to be written to an unintended location. The machine isn't actually prepared for transport until the light starts pulsating, and that typically takes about 30 seconds to a minute depending on RAM usage.

The problem with SafeSleep is that if data is being written to the hard drive when you close the screen, SafeSleep encounters an error that causes the machine to hang in sleep.

There is a UNIX command to disable SafeSleep, and this will allow your machine to go to sleep immediately when you close it. It should also reduce the chances that your machine will die in it's sleep, but consequently your machine will lose the ability to swap batteries and recover from where it left off, SafeSleep is what allows that. However, I don't swap batteries, so it's not really an issue for me. With SafeSleep disabled, the machine can be ready for transport in 2-3 seconds.

To do this command, you'll need to get into Terminal, Applications > Utilities > Terminal.

The Unix command to disable SafeSleep is:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

To re-enable SafeSleep, the command is:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3

You'll then enter an admin password to authenticate the change.

This command has fixed my issues with the machine dying in it's sleep, hopefully it'll work for you guys.

Devin, that is extremely helpful to know about and I am pretty sure that will solve my problem. Even the "Genius Bar guys" are going to be impressed, at my local Apple stores - they didn't know about this.

I won't disable SafeSleep mode; I am now just waiting until the light starts pulsating, before I move the MBP after shutting the lid.

I had noticed the pulsating vs non-pulsating light, but hadn't tied all this up yet - I have only owned this MBP for a short time.

Thanks for a major breakthrough in the reliability of my computing environment!!

PS, I meant to mention - I have been testing this, this evening; and as long as I WAIT after shutting the lid, until that light starts pulsating, I can leave anything open that I want! No lockups etc. All is well and good!!

For sure! I am relatively new here so didn't know about that yet.

Too bad they don't have a "super-helpful!" button.

Mark the question as unsolved again and then you can label my helpful post as the one that solved the problem. That'll give me even more points. Yaay!

I posted this on a similar thread about my experience and temporary solution:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6871462#6871462

This happened frequently after 10.5.2 update.
I found this works for my MBP when I get a blank screen in wake-up:

  • plug into external monitor through the dvi-vga adapter
  • remove the plug and do it one more time
  • this time press Fn key + F7 - twice
  • then you can remove the connection to external monitor
Does that give a clue about how to fix this more permanently?
