Wake from sleep to black screen with mouse
Posted: Jan 4, 2008 11:39 AM

About 1/4 of the time when I open the Macbook I see a quick flash of the desktop and login box but then the screen goes to black with an active mouse but nothing else. Attempting to use the keyboard only yields that keyboard entry not accepted chime/thump sound. When this happens there seems to be nothing I can do to bring it out of it so I end up holding down the power button to force a reboot. Any thoughts on what's causing this and how to stop it?

Same thing happens to me, pretty much exactly as you describe.

don't worry, you're not alone.
there's dozens of post all over the web but nobody's found the solution it seems, or at least not me.

If you're lucky, you have another computer and can ssh to your MBP to shut it down properly with 'shutdown -h now' or restart

Disabling the password protection didn't work for me as I now get just the black screen. I can hear the IM connecting and stuff, but no display. It's about what you say, 1/4 of the time...

I get this too, posts elsewhere suggest that when suspending your MacBook you should not move it at all until the flashing indicator shows that it has 'gone to sleep'. If you do move it then you more than likely will get the black screen. I'm trying this out and so far it appears to hold true. I will post back when I have done a few more tests.

i had the same problem - the solution to the problem is to close the lid when this happens to reactivate sleep; when you awaken the computer now the login screen appears, or the machine awakens properly (however you have your preferences set)

Occasionally shutting the lid, letting it sleep, and reopening it works. Most of the time it does not. Also my symptoms differ slightly, as I see no mouse pointer.

Perhaps related: I hadn't seen this problem for many months, until I connected my MBP to an HDTV to watch movies. Then EVERY time after disconnecting the TV, the MBP would wake to a black screen. Now, whether I've connected it to the TV or not, I see the failure about 25% of the time.

Another possible correlation is that it seems to happen more often than not when I am running WinXP under VMWare Fusion. This may be just coincidence, though, as I have VMWare running fairly often. (Sounds traitorous, but I have Win-only business apps to run ;-).

I have the same problem. It's intermittent without an external display attached, but happens nearly every single time when I disconnect all my devices at work, put the system to sleep, and head home. When I open the lid, I get a black screen. I can plug a display in and the external display works, but the laptop display remains blank, although sometimes I do see a mouse cursor. A restart clears it up, and sometimes, when I don't use an external display, I can put the system to sleep and wake it and everything works as expected.

None, and I mean NONE of the tricks others have tried seem to work, including resetting the power module, password protecting the wake from sleep, etc. This is really frustrating. I've seen loads of others on forums with the same issue and no solutions, and I've searched pretty darn hard for a solution.

I have the same wake to black screen issue, and opening and closing does nothing for me either. The only thing that gets me back to a viewable display is a restart, and unless I have an external display around to plug in, means a hard restart which is not a very good solution. I would LOVE to see Apple address this, as it appears to be a fairly prevalent issue and well characterized.

I found somebody who's written about the problem, and his analysis seems consistent with the symptoms I've seen (see http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/~pxc/pers/MacWakeProblems.html). I did not do a complete reinstall, omitting Leopard Graphics Update 1.0, but his solution for shutting down the machine works.

To summarize, if you get the "Black Screen of Death" (KSOD? :-)), briefly tap the power button. This causes the shutdown dialog box to appear, even though you can't see it. Its default choice is "shutdown", so if you next hit "enter", the computer will turn off (presuming nothing aborts the shutdown).

Read the post for ideas on how to avoid the problem. Despite his observations, though, sometimes it has nothing to do with external devices. It just happened to me, after shutting the lid with no devices attached. Hopefully Apple fixes this soon...

I am very surprised that there has been such little focus from Apple on the fact that between 10.4x and 10.5x some thing, definitely broke in the power management specs that has been causing so much frustration for users.

Yet today I received an update for Keynote and for Safari.

One last comment; I hope this topic does not get locked or closed like the others I've read in these forums regarding wake from sleep. If this issue has been resolved, then I must be one of the only users who has not heard about it.

yes, this is true. The MacBook is not safe for transport until that power light starts pulsating. I posted about a way to drastically decrease the time to sleep here:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6765992#6765992

Disabling SafeSleep worked for me for a while until I got 10.5.2. Now all bets are off.

When my Macbook refuses to wake up, I get nothing, not even a backlight, and the power light goes on solid. However, when my eMac first wakes up, it often gives me a second or two of what you're describing, the mouse cursor on the black screen. Then I get the screen, but nothing responds to clicking until the hard drive spins up. I guess this is kinda what you are describing, but I've never gotten stuck with the mouse cursor over black for longer than a few seconds.

For as long as I've had it, my eMac always wakes up from sleep consistently (it's still running 10.5.1). However, it's not going to sleep automatically anymore. I've heard of other people having this problem as well, but I'm not sure what's causing it.

The MacBook was the same until I disabled SafeSleep, that fixed the problem for a while, but now that I have all the latest updates after 10.5.2, closing the screen often causes the backlight to go out and a solid power light that never pulsates, no matter how long I wait for it (a very erratic problem). Then it doesn't respond when I open it again forcing me to hold the power button down. Some days it does that every time I close it, other days it gives me zero problems.

agreed! I actually think that's been the culprit of my wireless networking problems, too. My wireless signal goes out intermittently. Yesterday, when I tried to share an internet connection from ethernet over wireless from my MacBook, the device I had networking with it (my Nintendo DS) kept losing the signal, just like my MacBook looses the signal from my wireless router when it connects to a wireless network.

Curious problem, huh? I think maybe Apple has tried to setup Leopard to reconfigure the power going to the Wireless components of the computer in a way that causes them to temporarily die when the wireless connection becomes too active. I think it could be a failed attempt to extend the computer's battery life or save energy when the wireless is switched on. I think the reason we're seeing the problem in some machines and not others could be because different Macs are using different components for their wireless and some of them might be able to cope with this power management while others cause their users to suffer with these lost connections.

I don't know, that's just my hypothesis about the wireless issues I've had with Leopard. It might be a bit of a stretch, I don't know.

BUMP. Any updates to this issue yet?

Note: To all, I believe this is posted in the forum rules section so I shouldn't be breaking any rules by mentioning it again here but, I would be take care in the detail of your forum posts. It seems I've had a some deleted for being too issue specific. You wouldn't know though because they've been removed.
