Airport no longer connects to OPEN wireless networks

Lots of people seem to think that their airport keeps dropping the connection to OPEN wireless networks because of the 2008-001 airport update. That is probably only true for a Macbook 2,1 (aka Macbook Core 2 Duo).
I had the issue on my Macbook 1,1 (aka Macbook Core Duo). I wiped the system clean. Re-installed OS-X. Applied all updates BUT:
1. Airport 2008-001
2. Security update 2008-002
I also downgraded the Airport firmware to 2007-004 (aka version 1.1.9.3).
Technically speaking this should have resolved the issue but it didn't.
Why do I believe it should have resolved the issue? Because the same approach worked on the Macbook 2,1 and they both have the exact same Airport card.
Now I have no idea how to get it fixed - I think I have tried every possible way. There doesn't seem to be any way to contact Apple coz I don't have a support contract.
But hey, do I need a contract? Apple broke this for me ... they should fix this. I am about to post this as a tech article on engadget and other places because there are SO many people suffering from poor testing on Apple's behalf.
Apple, please respond.
Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to the forums!
We're just other users here, you won't be talking to anybody at Apple here!
I'm on my way to work right now, but will try to get back with some questions/answers.
Have you updated the Router's Firmware?
Tried turning of n mode if present?

Router in question is the Westell 327W15 which most people have had problems with. N mode doesn't seem to be supported on it. The firmware was updated to the latest and greatest VER:03.02.01.
My second Core 2 Duo Macbook suffered the same problem when I applied the airport 2008 update, but as soon as I downgraded it to 2007004, it was back to normal. Why this doesn't work on the Core Duo Macbook is strange coz both of them seem to have the same airport card. Both are on OS X 10.4.11.
I took the Mac to my work and the wireless worked flawlessly so definitely an issue with unsecured/open networks.

Have you tried the 20% successful trick of instead of selecting the Network under Airport, selecting other and typing in the Name?
Have you Looked in Keychains to delete any reference to a like Network?
Have you tried logging out & back in?

Yep, all of those. Never stored any passwords so keychain issue wasn't there. My guess is that 10.4.11 combined update with Safari does something to the Core Duo Macbook ... but I have nothing to backup my guess.

When you say they have the same "airport Card", what does System Profiler report about the two?
Might take an Archive & Install to get back to Home Base. (Pun intended)

Did an archive and install and brought the system back to 10.4.6. No Go!
Trying to download the 10.4.7 and 10.4.10 to see if they help - this thing is seriously messed up.

10.4.7 - No Go!
10.4.8 - No Go!
10.4.9 - No Go!
10.4.10 - No Go!
Airport Extreme (0x168C,0x86) at 1.1.9.3 (2007-04 update)
Do you think the Mac store will help if I take this in?

Sure, I think most would, but make an appointment for most of them.

Visited the "genius" bar this afternoon - what a trip!! The guy said this is a Verizon issue, period. I was like you must be kidding, there are SO many people out there who got affected and not everyone uses verizon ... he actually got pretty mad and said you should be using mac hardware (router) and secure network. I even told him my second Macbook is working fine on the same Verizon network. This is their new location in the Northern VA area at Fair Oaks Mall.
I would call that guy anything but a genius, what a waste of time. This was my first and last trip to a "genius" bar.
If anyone comes across any new ideas, please share.
Thanks.
