Managed/Parental Control Accounts No longer have access to iTunes Store
Posted: Jun 5, 2008 5:31 AM

Hello,

After installing 10.5.3 the "Managed User Accounts" those with "Parental Controls" set can no longer access the iTunes store. This is happening even though I have no restriction on the content these accounts can access either in iTunes or System preferences.

If I change the accounts to standard users the iTunes store works again. If I simply turn on Parental Accounts the iTunes store no longer connects for these accounts. This all worked before installing 10.5.3.

I use the Parental Controls to restict access to programs like TimeMachine and developement tools, ect...as well as managing when services are available on the iMac's. So turning these accounts into Standard Users is less than desireable.

Is anyone else experiencing this or have a workaround?

Regards,
Wayne

Thank you,
Wayne

This is happening to me as well. I've spent countless hours on the phone with Apple Care and now have an open ticket with second level support. Apparently it's one of those undocumented but known issues...?! sorry, that doesn't help me...

my workaround is to have parental control on. When my child wants to go to iTunes, he tells me and I disable parent control temporarily. Granted, not an ideal situation but it seemed the simplest way to go...

Same problem for me. I must disable parental controls on a subaccount when that account holder, my daughter, wants to access the iTunes store. Didn't happen prior to a recent software update. (Not sure of the specific update that caused the problem.)

I also spent about 2 hours with Apple Tech Support today on this issue. The only workaround I could find was to DISABLE parental controls.

In the iTunes/Store thread in Discussions, there was a link to give Apple feedback on this issue. Here is the link to the feedback page; to get this fixed, I think Apple has to really hear from us. Maybe this is a place to give that kind of feedback:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

Also, having parental controls enables also caused access problems for my child at Webkinz and a school-controlled email account. A thread elsewhere in Discussions listed the IP addresses for Webkinz (also on Webkinz help page here:

http://www.webkinz.com/faq/c.html#18

After going through the thread, here are all the IPs (for your convenience):

66.48.69.98
66.48.69.99
66.48.69.102
66.48.69.104
66.48.69.123
66.48.83.160
66.48.83.161
66.48.83.162
66.48.83.163
66.48.83.164
66.48.83.165

also, add 106, 116, and 117.

66.48.69.118
66.48.69.124
66.48.83.211

I agree; Apple needs to FIX this issue in Leopard and SOON.

For what it's worth, I took your advice and posted the following on the Feedback page. Perhaps others can provide similar advice to the Apple OS management folks, though I do wonder if these ever see the light of day. Will post back anything I hear...

A number of folks have posted comments on multiple threads in the discussion groups about the inability for accounts with Parental Controls turned on to access the iTunes Store. (I have not posted an additional request/comment/complaint, since there are plenty already posted, and my addition won't help anything, though I have also experienced the problem.)

But my biggest problem is the obvious lack of any feedback from Apple on this. The only folks who have received any response at all on the issue have heard that "Apple is monitoring the issue." What the heck is that? Is there a forum somewhere where we can see and understand what you are working on? When we might expect some help? I just took the plunge and upgraded to 10.5, and now I'm wondering if I can go backwards somehow. This issue is that big for many of us with kids, most of whom own Macs because they are better all around machines for our kids. But as one poster put it, kids and the iTunes store just sort of go together, and this seems to demonstrate a significant lack of either understanding or concern on the part of the Apple OS developers. Or at the very least, a surprising lack of concern for the importance of communication with your otherwise loyal fan base.

Any feedback on this would be appreciated.

As much as I hate to do this, please add me to the "me too" list. Parental Controls has completely screwed up my son's account on his Mac. It appears that I have to disable the PC in order for him to be able access the webkinz and school web sites he had been using prior to the upgrade.

This really disappoints me.

There must be some more IPs to add not listed here to get Webkinz running under parental controls.

I've added this entire list of 17 IPs and although I can now login to Webkinz world, the ensuing "home" page is blank. There must be some calls being made to other IPs...

Anyone who can update the list who has gotten in would be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance...

Well I just down loaded 10.5.5 hoping it would correct the problem - no luck. My workaround is this. Use the new GENIUS feature, disable 1 click purchase on kid's accounts (way too easy to waste their credits if they have any). Even with Parental controls on, they are able to click on a GENIUS recommended song, which gets them into the music sub-store of the iTunes Store. From there, they can get anywhere except the iTunes Main Page.

The Webkinz issue is caused by the way Webkinz redirects users to other servers. They do this because of the huge amount of users and traffic. But the casualty is our sanity everytime the redirect happens to a server we have not previously authorized on the Parental Control (PC). My kids (age 9 and 12) have PC set to the middle option, allowing the OS X to "Generally" disallow inappropriate content. Then I set the "always allow" to include Webkinz. I have the "Never allow" set to youtube, and any other site I hear the kdis talk about the I think needs greater review before allowed. The OS does a really great job filtering even google searches. Log in as them and go to town with google, and other web sites. Works nice.
