Just to let anyone still with a sync problem know: resetting keychains resolved my “there was a problem with the sync operation - .mac login failed” issue. I had tried everything else including deleting dotmac plist files. Good help from mobileMe chat support. By the way he said there are no plans for a Tiger update to change .mac to mobileme in systems prefs.

So my old keychain will no longer work? Does this mean that if, for example, I visit a bank site that I will have to input all my passwords again?
Also, I can access the .mac pref panel just fine on my G4 laptop
on edit:
Wait a sec, it all of a sudden started working (?) Maybe it had something to do with logging in from my laptop... maybe Apple ran a fix on sync?

I wish I knew!
I was messing around in keychain, throwing out some old stuff, things with an old email address on it. I tried the pref pane on the G5 again and it froze as usual. I went to my G4 laptop and tried the .mac pref pane from there and it appeared that it was working as it should. I went back to the G5 and tried the pane again and it worked. I ran sync and it worked, though I did nothing to actually verify it. I am now running it again but it is taking a very long time to sync up.

Hey, I was reading through some of this, and a friend of mine said he ran into the same thing. He's not terribly good with computers so he ask me to help him out. I'm on 10.5, but i thought I'd look here for help and see what I could find. Then he just go back to me though and said he could sync now. We don't know what changed. Is anyone seeing the same?
My buddy is on 10.4.11.

luvinmc, I guess that lends some weight to the idea that Apple is working on it. It would be nice, since apparently we are all part of a huge beta test, to have some sort of update on what was being done and when it was happening.
I did stop the latest test of the sync upload from the G5, it was taking forever, and since it had worked once earlier today I thought enough was enough.
I went to the G4 laptop and synced down from .mac. The Calendar unexpectedly quit having lost a lot of sub calendars, but when I restarted the Calendar it started syncing properly. Bookmarks synced properly. I am not currently syncing my address book.

I should have included that I am not on Tiger but on 10.4.11 and I have fully updated the software. I am having the same problem as your friend. My laptop with the Intel chip same 10.4.11 but newer versions of iCal and address book has the same problem as the mac mini.

yeah, I agree no word is not cool. I think some people have contacted support (or sounded like they planned to); has anyone heard any update from support at Apple on this?
I guess if you sync now like my buddy did, then probably no need to even contact them.

Mail works, sync worked, and right now .mac or .me is not a critical feature so I'm able to bide my time. I'll tell you one thing though, I'd hate to be in the .me basements trying to get this system up and running as advertised. I figure they are putting in a lot of hours under a lot of pressure. I'm not trying to diminish the problems, but I think they are being worked on and for myself waiting and watching is probably the best tactic.

Thanks Gaston Melis this solution worked for me!
I signed out, ran Repair Permissions and logged in using "myaccount@me.com"
My mac didn't have the three files to delete or I would have tried that first.

This fixed it for me using my new Macbook Pro and 10.5.4. Just log out, and log in using your @me.com instead of @mac.com and it should work.

Hey all. I too deleted the three files, then it turned into 4 files, next thing you know I am deleting everything associated with dotmac that I found. None of it worked, Sync was still grayed out on me. However, like some of you mentioned, if I created a new account and logged on under that, I could sync just fine. So this is what I did to finally fix the issue.
I created a dummy admin account on my Mac, logged into it and set up sync services. I didn't actually sync anything, I just set it up.
I then logged out of the dummy account, logged into my real account and deleted the dummy account saving the files (do not delete immediately, keep the files).
Then under the drive, went to Users>Deleted Users and mounted the dummy account information drive. Went to Library>Application Support and copied the 'Sync Services' folder over to my library overwriting the existing data.
I didn't have to log out or anything, just reopened system preferences and the sync worked perfect.
Although not everything works for everybody, it worked for me perfect. Hope it helps anyone else

I was having all of the same problems listed here and tried everyone one of the suggestions offered from other postings below. I even talked with a mobile me support person online and they must have been reading the same posts, since all of the suggestions were exactly what I had already done. After being down for many days and not able to sync my iphone, tower, and laptop. I finally went down to the Genius bar, where after an hour of doing the same steps. The only suggestion was to reinstall my software, something I wasn't looking forward to doing. It took a day to make sure everything was backed up, but now it's working and I am finally able to sync everything.
I know it's not the first choice for most people, but for me it turned out to be the only one that fixed the problem.
Hope this helps someone else.
