I have this same issue. Restarting seems to help but that is a bit of a drag. Hope there is a real fix soon.

I've experienced the same issue, too. What I usually do is keep typing fast even though iPhone has not written the word on my screen yet. Sometimes, that crashes the app I'm in, other times it just keeps working. I wonder if it's some sort of memory issue on some of the "heavier" more memory-intensive sites?

Same issue. Doing the little trick of pressing the home key and going back to SMS fixes it for me until they patch this.

I too must report the same issue and the video shows the exact problem. This is rather troublesome because its counter productive for texting. Text messaging should be a short and quick means of communication. On the iPhone it is not.

I talked to ATT today and the tech gave me some good advice regarding the iPhone. I called about the lack of service which she was not able to help me with, but I asked her if there was anything else she could help me with (oh, she's supposed to ask me that) and she told me that it helps if you reboot the iPhone every couple of days by holding down the power button and at the same time hold the home button, don't slide the slider bar but wait for the apple to appear. She said that will release programs/apps from memory. I don't think that I've ever done this so I thought it was good advice and gave it a try. I'm thinking that this slow typing response is a processor thing, so the reboot would probably help.
If you try this, please post back if it works for you.

I read a tip from another user about this problem and the user suggested an odd way to fix the slow key taps. Who knows why it works but it does: go to settings / general / keyboard / and then (in addition to your current keyboard) add to international keyboards. I select French and Spanish. My keyboard taps are now super speedy. My hat is off to whomever originally posted this. Hope this helps you.

Hi all! I have a work around for this problem on my first generation iPhone with firmware version 2.0(5A347) that does not require rebooting. Here is how it goes:
1. When you start to type an email or text message hit space (or any letter).
2. Drag the cursor back to the beginning of the line before the character you just typed.
3. Start typing your message, and you will notice it is now super fast.
Let me know if this works for you.
