Faxing through the dsl modem and not a internal modem
Posted: Aug 21, 2008 7:19 PM

I use to fax things with the internal modem a few years back. Anyway to do this through the dsl modem now? I don't see a graphic for the modem to click on but the old internal modem icon is still on screen.
Thanks

While there may be a way to fax via some DSL technologies,
the computer's hardware and standard fax software rely on
the dialup telephone technologies, to be compatible with the
older and common facsimile machines most business and
home offices would have.

There may be a newer technology to facilitate this method
of sending and receiving faxes via DSL; since the speed
increase would be a welcome plus over the dialup fax 28k.

Some technology companies should list some products or
at least other discussions online may exist; and perhaps
a search of the web may bring a few results to work with.

Good luck & happy computing! :)

Solved

Real Faxing can only be done on an Analog Modem and an Analog Phone Line... no digital can be used.

There are many services like this that allow you to do essentially what you want to...

As previous mentioned, the hardware and software in your machine
would use the standard means and methods to send and receive fax.

There are different technologies and they may not be compatible
with others; even so, there are listings online about alternatives.

No. You need your internal fax modem or an external fax modem to fax.

There are, however, online businesses that you send documents to electronically, and they will fax it for a monthly fee or for a per fax / per page fee.

Well ,guess I'll just unplug the phone line and plug up the internal then.....I just thought it might have worked since it was still the phone line....how odd though.

Thanks for all the info on this....it was very helpful....

Unless you have converted to digital VoIP type of phone line, there is no reason that you can't fax on the same phone line as you have your DSL on. You just can't use the DSL modem as the fax modem.

Some DSL modems have a "line" and "tel" jack -- plug the "line" jack to the wall and plug the "tel" jack to your fax. Got a phone plugged into the "tel" jack? Put a "Y" splitter on the fax and telephone and plug the splitter into the "tel" jack.

Some DSL modems only have one single RJ-11 jack. But they provide DSL splitter filters -- one non-line side is filtered for fax and phone, the other is unfiltered for DSL. Run the filtered side to your fax or separate Radio Shack Y-splitter to your fax and phone.

Some DSL modems with the single RJ-11 jack don't provide the "Y" splitter filtered/unfiltered thingy, and instead only provide single in-line DSL filters (one RJ-11 input and one RJ-11 output). Buy a Radio Shack "Y" splitter, run one output to the DSL, run the other output to the in-line DSL filter and on to the fax or second Y splitter then on to the fax and phone.

You just can't use the DSL modem as a fax modem; you still need to use the built-in fax modem of your computer, or Apple external USB modem or equivalent if you don't have an internal fax modem, in order to fax.

The use of DSL (with filter for phone, also maybe for fax) lines is going on; but just
not over the DSL internet. The wires carry a shared burden of different frequencies.

Just don't expect anyone to be calling you on the phone while your computer is using
the dial out to send or receive fax, since your telephone line would be needed; & busy.

{Otherwise, alternative non-phone/fax line facsimile services are available; some can
do a fax-to-email service for a fee. Some do this for free; with limits... maybe with an
advertisement tie-in? Most are a subscription service that converts & forwards faxes.}

Keep in mind, most faxes and emails are not secure means to send data or info...

And I did answer your basic question, as it appeared to be, earlier:
"...the computer's hardware and standard fax software rely on the
dialup telephone technologies, to be compatible with the older and
common facsimile machines..."

Well, not really; the answer arrived and it was somewhat confirmed
with additional details which clarified it. I think you did OK, so long
as you have some information you can use; if not, please post back.
