To everyone posting to this topic:
Please read the Discussions Help & Terms of Use before adding anything new to this topic. Note the following definition in the glossary in that document (emphasis added):
Threadjack—To wrongly post a dissimilar issue in an existing discussion, distracting from the true focus of the discussion. If your issue has any significant difference from a similar topic, then you're probably better off posting a new topic to focus attention on your particular issue.
Also note that the document tells you that if a topic is marked as a question, a member (known as the "OP," short for "original poster") is looking for answers. Please do not threadjack an OP's question. It shows a lack of consideration for that person & their issue, makes it difficult to tell what response applies to what issue or which user(s), & greatly decreases the chances that someone will respond to your post about a dissimilar issue. (Many of the most highly rated Discussions users simply won't respond to a threadjack post, mostly because of the confusion it causes & the extra work needed to sort things out.)
So please, consider very carefully if your issue has any significant differences from the issue mentioned in the first post of this or any other topic (even if the subject line is general) & if it does, start your own topic, preferably with a descriptive subject. This benefits everyone & will be greatly appreciated by those that frequent Discussions.

Booting with an external display, keyboard and mouse works. I am typing this from my "broken" laptop right now.
Here's how I did it:
- Powered off my MacBook Pro
- Plugged in an external display
- Plugged in an external USB Keyboard and USB Mouse
- Hit the power button on the MacBook Pro
- Closed the lid on my MacBook Pro
The display booted up. I am now backing up via firewire drive and time machine. I will then attempt to repair permissions and/or install Leopard again.
Does anyone have other ideas how to fix the 10.5.6 problem once you get in this way?

How I fixed my MacBook Pro after the 10.5.6 Update

Thanks everyone for your earlier posts - it helped lead me to the solution for fixing mine. This requires an external display, keyboard and mouse.
Here's how I did it:
* Powered off my MacBook Pro
* Plugged in an external display
* Plugged in an external USB Keyboard and USB Mouse
* Hit the power button on the MacBook Pro
* Closed the lid on my MacBook Pro
As a precaution, I used TimeMachine with an external Firewire hard drive to back up my latest files.
Then, I did the following:
- Deleted Caches directory files in all three places (System/Library/Caches, (My account name)/Library/Caches and (My Volume Name)/Library/Caches. I am not sure this step is necessary.
- I downloaded the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update from April 2008 v. 1.51. Apparently, I was running slightly old firmware and didn't know it. When I finally booted my MacBook with the external display, Apple had resent this software update - I am assuming they are figuring out the solution to this problem in parallel to this thread.
- I ran the EFI Firmware update and shut down. Held the power on button again until I heard a longtone. The firmware update ran successfully this time and my MacBook booted okay!
Hooray, my MacBook Pro is working again. And this seems to confirm for me that the 10.5.6 update breaks some systems if you are running older firmware.

Hey Guys,
I have a MacBook Pro with ATI Graphics. It's my first Mac and by far I'm no Mac expert (so take this for what it's worth).
I was having the exact same problem. I've been beating my head against the wall trying to fix it for a few days now. Luckily I had it boot camped so I can play Fallout 3 (which totally kicks *** btw) and my Mac would boot up fine in Windows XP (irony!). That pretty much told me it wasn't a hardware issue. For lack of anything else to try, I figured I'd wipe and reload OSX (that's the Windows user in me). I put the OSX install disk and guess what... after it booted up the screen went black AGAIN!!!
By this time I'm about ready to throw in the towel and call Mac support and try to make an appointment for them to look at it. I live in Japan I'd have to go into Tokyo to the Mac store in Ginza. Not such a bad deal, it would give me an excuse to go to Ginza! Anyway, I turned on the light (which is very very bright) so I could write down the serial number and I noticed a very faint outline of a dialog box and text on the screen. It was the install disk language menu! It was very faint and hard to see even in bright light, but it was there. I used a flashlight and I was able to see the mouse pointer and click stuff.
I then cycled the power and let it boot up normally. The screen went black again, but with the flashlight I was able to see the screen well enough to login. Once I was logged in, I was able to hit the F2 to brighten the screen. Now everything seems to be fine. I rebooted and not it's coming up normally.
Could it be that the update just set the screen brightness all the way down or am I just a Mac idiot?
I hope that helps.

I did the 10.5.6 update through Software Updater. Having downloaded the stuff, the computer froze when installing (stopped at 88%). As a result I couldn't start up at all (MBP would stop booting up and freeze). My solution was to download the 10.5.6 combo to my wife's MB and then I opened my MBP in Target mode and installed the Combo from her laptop. Now all is fine. Happy Friday!

I apologize if this has already been posted but I didn't want to read every single post. But I found this site that seems to have the symptoms some of you are experiencing and contains a fix.
http://www.idealog.us/2008/12/confirmed-apple-os-x-1056-update-can-break-your-macbook-pro.html
It does require an extra monitor and keyboard, but for those of you with that, hopefully this will help.

After the update, the back light failed on startup. Booting into XP in boot camp still works. Booting into MacOSX works while on the gray screen. Once it brings up the desktop, the screen goes black. My external display works though.

Your issue is significantly different from the one stated in the first post of the topic. Please start a new thread of your own or contribute to one with no significant differences. Contributing to this topic only confuses things.

R C-R... what Michael is describing is exactly to topic. You have just been plain annoying on this thread and are not helping any. Can you just go away and get a life? (Oh, and maybe go learn some basic reading comprehension while you are at it).
Michael, the problem seems to be a missed EFI update from April 2008. Please see eric.l and NewsCloud's posts on how they fixed their machines by updating their firmware. Also see how Beerman07 was able to get the screen working by starting from scratch and reinstalling 10.5. When he tried the 10.5.6 upgrade without installing the EFI update, he had the same issues again.

The topic is what the OP (original poster) states in the first post that starts this thread (a dead logic board). Show a little respect for the OP & do not threadjack this topic. Please read the Help & Terms of Use if you do not understand what that means.

Check on your girlfriend's MacBook Pro and launch System Profiler. See if it says that the computer is using an Intel graphics chip. My guess is that you'll find the expected NVidia GPU is nowhere to be seen in the list of devices. If I'm right about that, then what you're seeing is a pretty sure sign the NVidia graphics chip has failed. Apple has a warranty extension program for this issue. Take it to an Apple store and they'll swap out the logic board.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
If you can see the NVidia chip in System Profiler, try an SMC reset followed by an "NVRAM" reset, followed by power cycling the machine. This could be something as simple as corrupt pixel clock, resolution, or bit depth data stored in the "NVRAM" (really a file on disk, IIRC). Failing that, I've got nothing....

If yours won't boot into target disk mode, that's often a symptom of a hard drive crash. At least that was my experience when my MacBook HD died. Try waiting five minutes for target disk mode to come up. If it eventually comes up, your hard drive is probably dead, and you'll only be able to see the optical drive via TDM.
A HD failure will also probably prevent the firmware from successfully booting the test disk for the NVidia chip issue... for several minutes, anyway.... If that's the problem... well, it's a heck of a lot cheaper to fix than a logic board.
