A new nvidia graphics update just hit the tubes today. The description doesn't detail anything about resolving the connectivity with external monitor. I've updated my macbook but haven't tested it out yet Let's hope this fixes the issue.

No one has noticed any differences here and in the office... but lets definitely hope as you suggest that it fixes the external monitor this issue.

I downloaded the update today and regret that I did. The problem for me is now worse. I cannot use my external samsung 22inch monitor on extended desktop mode, only mirror mode, and that is not helpful to me. In extended mode it goes black for extended times, flicking on occasionally to remind me that its there still.

Same here.
It was every 10/15 minute before on my LG L206W and now i can't even see the screen ... it blink too much ...
the only way i made it work is by ork in extended mode and put in 1680x1500 because 1680x1050 make black screen.
mirror mode don't work at all ...
please apple help us!

I thought the update was specifically for dual link adapter users. I loaded it and so far haven't seen any problems on my 30" samsung 305T.

I'm afraid to say since downloading the NVidia update this evening the problem of my external Samsung SyncMaster 2232BW display has gone from black screening for 3 seconds to now staying a black screen for 10-20 seconds only flicking on for 1 second! This is appalling from Apple!
I have called AppleCare this evening and spoke with second level support and whilst the guy was helpful he said there was nothing he could do to fix my problem and he would get back to me within a week. He completely agreed that the current situation was unacceptable.
So using my Macbook for photo and video editing needing to use an external display is useless. I'm so glad I wasted £1000 on a piece of useless metal!
This was my first transition to Apple hoping to dump Microsoft, but I am wishing I had not bothered as all I have go so far is problems (far more than I ever have in 10 years with Microsoft!)
Come on Apple I thought Macs were suppose to just work without the hassle!

Ok I just got off the phone with Apple and the product specialist told me that they are aware of the blackout issues with the external monitors and he acknowledged that the NVIDIA update actually made things worse. He told me that all it is, is a software problem and not related to hardware so don't go out changing your logic boards.
He also told me that their engineers are working on the problem and will shoot out the fix in the next major update so I'm guess Mac OS X 10.5.7.
Finally he told me a lot of their representative still don't know about these two issue so if you ever call them and they tell you that their unaware of this particular problem their just uninformed.
Let's hope a solution comes sooner then later because at this point I'm getting pretty fed up with later.
Hey at least the product expert was friendly and polite.

if anybody don't know: the programm SwitchResX http://www.madrau.com/switchres/SwitchResXControl.zip solves the probleme with the screen flashing.
only create a custom profile with exact 60Hz, then it's nor more flashing!!!
this also should be told the apple engineers...

I am having a problem that I suspect might be related to this update. I just got the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter from Apple and it is having a weird issue with my external monitor. The colour of the screen tints green then switches to blue or some other colour every few seconds. This is VERY annoying and makes the text unreadable.
I have posted a video of this on youtube.com

It has definitely something to do with the update. Apple has actually taken down the update from their site and their software update manager within the Mac OS. There's a link about this here http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/01/29/apple_pulls_nvidia_graphics_update_reasons_unclear.html
As the discussion boards have previously stated many have issues (including myself) with relations to the connectivity to external monitors regardless of the Nvidia update, the latest update just made matters worse.

If your Mac worked fine with the external monitor before updating the Nvidia Graphic Update, uninstall the update would be the best solution now. And it works for me.
Requirement: you must have a TIME MACHINE
- Browse the content of the TIME MACHINE and choose the back up folder having the date before you updated the system. Navigate to /System/Library/Extension.
- Drag the following files from /System/Library/Extension on the TIME MACHINE to /System/Library/Extension on your hard drive and choose replace
AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext
NVDANV10Hal.kext
NVDANV20Hal.kext
NVDANV30Hal.kext
NVDANV40Hal.kext
NVDANV50Hal.kext
NVDAResman.kext.
Hope this solution can work on your system.
You should read this website for knowing how I can know what files should be replaced.
