I also have dumped all of iCal's preferences and apps, Re-installed from scratch...etc. And nothing. The only time I can open iCal with no problems is by making a new user and opening it there! Any ideas as to why this could be? Thanks!

Well, my problem was solved by reinstalling Tiger. I dumped all the iCal files (app and any prefs), reinstalled (in place) Tiger and then reinstalled iCal. Painful but solved.
Thanks for all who replied to this thread.

ICal crashed on launch (I use iSync with a P910i smart phone). You were right: the problem is with iSync. I followed your suggestions and everything is working fine now.
Thanks,
Laurent

Great work Michel. Now if we could just get Apple to publish a trouble shooting flow chart.

I wonder if a simple reinstall of iSync would fix this problem??

Thank you very much Michael!, your procedure should be posted on the Apple's support pages, I've tried everything, dumping plists, preferences, even trashing my calendars (not without backing-up first of course), reinstalling iCal from the Tiger DVD with pacifist and you were right, the problem was all the time iSync 2 (which seems to be a downgrade on Tiger, I hate that I can't no longer sync from the menu bar) anyway, so after I disabled syncing and resetting sync history, iCal was able to run, interestingly before disable syncing my Palm had vanished from the device list, leaving only my SE phone, so I quitted iSync, opened iCal again, and since I've trashed my calendars it was empty but with about 30 empty unlabeled calendars and some other empty Home and Work calendars, I trashed again everything under the ~/Library/Application Support/iCal folder, reopened iCal again, reverted my backup, synced both my tungsten C and my SE 750 phone and everything worked perfectly.

Mine's not working either, for all users. I've done the iSync tricks too, the disc repair, trashing everything... Now it doesn't give me the unexpected quit window; rather the iCal icon bounces a few times (I have it in my dock), then it completely disappears! There's a hole in the dock that if i mouse over shows the iCal menu with "Application not Responding." Has this happened to anyone else?

If you control-click the hole in the dock are you offered the quit option? If so, take it. Otherwise use alt-command-esc to bring up the application list and force iCal to quit.
Mine's not working either, for all users
Have you made a new user and tested it there (rather than trying it with a previously-existing user)?

Michael, you are a life saver. I had reached the conclusion that the problem had something to do with iSync 2 under Tiger, but all I'd tried was dumping the iSync preferences, which didn't solve the problem. Thanks for your help.

edit:
by everything i mean...

can you explain how to use pacifist to do this and by standalone do you mean the regular or combo updater?

Michel and the rest of the crowd,
I just had this very same problem. I was not using iSync, but "Missing Sync for Windows Mobile". Still got the crash-on-start problem. I disabled iSync and the problem has gone.
Thanks for posting this information.

Not all applications use the same font set, and iCal used to be very sensitive to missing or damaged fonts. I don't know if the sensitivity was fixed in v2, but it is worth checking. My copy of iCal is using Helvetica, LucidaGrande and HelveticaNeue. You can check them with Font Book in the Applications folder.
If the crashing is at launch, and persists for a new user, then it is not likely to be a problem with preference or data files, and you have checked permissions, disks etc. If it is not the fonts I would do a reinstallation of iCal, but move your calendar files somewhere safe first.
