Cannot Ping the Canon MX700 from my MacBook

Hello,
I'm going nuts with my setup and would greatly appreciate the help of someone out there... I'm trying to set up my Canon MX700 to print/scan wirelessly over my network but for some reason I cannot see the printer from my MacBook. My network setup is an Airport Express 802.11n working as router (connected to the RCA modem provided by the cable company) and another Airport Express 802.11g (the old model), to which I connect my printer in the other room.
I already installed the Canon MX700 via USB cable to the Macbook and it prints and scans fine. I'm even able to print (not scan) over the network when I connect the printer to the Airport Express 802.11g via USB cable. However, when I connect the printer to the AE 802.11g via ethernet cable, I cannot see the printer from my Macbook. I'm not very knowledgeable on networks, but based on what I read on some of these threads, I opened Terminal and ping the 192.168.1.123 IP address, which is the one of the printer. I got a message saying "No route to host ping... Host is down". I believe this is the reason why I'm not able to complete my printer installation.
I also tried to ping the address of the Airport Express 802.11g and that was successful. Any suggestions? Please?

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
There are a couple of things I suggest you check.
The first is that the IP address you are attempting to ping is actually that of the MX700. You should be able to check via the control panel of the printer. Rotate the dial to the maintenance icon (the pliers and screwdriver). Select Device Settings then press OK. Scroll down to LAN settings and press OK. Then scroll down to 'Wired LAN setting list' and press OK. This will show you the IP address that has been set in the printer.
The other thing to check is that your Mac is set to the same subnet as the printer. The subnet is determined by the subnet mask, and usually for a local network the mask will be 255.255.255.0. When this is the case, the subnet is the first three sets of numbers of the IP address, while the last set of digits is the network address. For example, a computer with an IP address of 10.0.1.5 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 had a subnet of 10.0.1.x and a network address of 5. For other computers on this network to talk successfully to each other they must have the same subnet but a different network address.

Thanks. everything you suggested seems to be right in my settings and now I think the problem is the Airport Express ethernet port (it may be the case since I got it from somebody who hadn't used it for a while). The reason why I think is the port is that I cannot see an "Ethernet Connection" in System Preferences/Network, when I connect the AE directly to my MacBook via ethernet cable. I also tried my other Airport Express and in that case the MacBook did find the Ethernet connection. I read somewhere that they can test it at the Genius Bar. I'll take it there unless anybody has a suggestion to check/fix the ethernet port. thanks for the help.

Paul:
It took me a while to go to the apple store to check my Airport Express, which they told me it was working fine. I also found out about the problem: The old model of Airport Express doesn't allow to print/scan via its Ethernet port connected to the printer. I ended up switching my two AEs, and now I have the new model connected to the printer, and the old model serving as router. Everything works fine now!!
As a side note, I checked the speed of my connection and it was unchanged, which was a nice surprise. I would've thought that the older model was going to yield lower connection rates...
Thanks for your help.
