Connecting Yamaha psr e323 to Mac
Posted: Nov 3, 2009 10:04 AM

Dear All,

I am considering purchasing a Yamaha psr e323 for my daughter. I would like to connect this to the Mac and allow my daughter to transfer any tunes she creates to Garageband.

I have searched elsewhere on the web and it is not quite clear how to do this. I have found reference to MIDI to USB connectors - specifically UX-16. However, other websites mention that a MIDI box is required.

If I purchase a UX-16, will I be able to load tunes to Garageband?

Thanks in advance for all replies,

Andrew

Since midi is a standardized data format, you can use any midi interface from any manufacturer to connect your keyboard to the Mac - as long as it works with Macs in general and your OS version in particular. I'm not sure about the Yamaha interface, you might also look into M-Audio's Uno series. Midi interfaces need a driver software, and sometimes the companies are slow to provide new drivers when a new Mac OS comes out, so make sure you can return it if you don't get it to work.

Once you have the keyboard connected to the Mac, you can't "load" the complete tunes into GarageBand (or any other software). You'll have to play each single intstrument's track on the keyboard and record it in real time to a separate software instrument track in GarageBand.

I bought a UX-16 after I read everyones problems with Yamaha and USB/Midi stuff... it works FLAWLESSLY in Garageband and also in Logic Studio. I recommend the UX-16 to everyone as Yamaha likes Yamaha ;)

Good to hear - one caveat: From your status lines I read that you are using Leopard while the OP is on Snow Leopard. Maybe someone can tell us if the UX-16 is Snow Leopard ready.
