Time Capsule, Macbook Pro and Internet

I just set up a new 15" MacBook Pro for a client, as well as a Time Capsule and a networked printer. The MBP has no problem connecting wirelessly to the network and printing. However, the connection to the Internet is not stable. While there is no Internet connection, I am able to connect with my Nokia E71 with no problem. Unfortunately there are no unsecured wireless networks in range to test the computer on another wireless network. Further, while the connection is down, there is no access via Ethernet as well. I had long discussions with Apple people on the phone and an appointment was made for my client to bring both the MBP and the TC into an Apple store for testing. Unfortunately the so-called genius assumed that the problem was with interference from a wireless phone and set up a second network, on the 5GHZ band (I think--my client didn't fully understand what he did) without checking both devices. The problem lies either with the TC (some kind of MAC-address filtering which allows my phone to connect but not her MBP) or with the MBP (TCP/IP stack?) but since the scg didn't test them together, I don't know. This has already cost my client far more than she bargained for plus a wasted trip to the Apple store. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello themaven. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does your client's ISP require that she registers the MAC address of the device that will be connected to their Internet service? If not, then it is possible that the communication between the Internet modem & the Time Capsule (TC) has not been properly established.
I suggest trying the following:
o Power-down the modem, TC, and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes. Order is not critical.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the TC; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
o Power-up the computer(s).
The computer(s) should now have Internet connectivity from the TC whether they are connected to it by Ethernet or wireless. Please post back your results.

Hi Tesserax,
Thanks for your speedy reply. The TC is connected to a Westell modem/router, so there's a 192.168.x.x address on the WAN side of the TC so there's no MAC address problem on the WAN side. (I also tried the TC in bridge mode and same problem.) As I wrote, my E71 connects to the Internet just fine while her MBP doesn't. As I write this, I'm thinking--since the problem is the same in bridge mode--that it's the computer and not the TC. Are there settings in the new MBP (mine is 2006) to block access to certain Internet services like there are in most routers? I didn't try to ping or ftp, so I can't be sure about them.
Thanks again and any further ideas will be greatly appreciated.

What is your clients networking goal with the TC? That is do you want for it to create a second wireless network? ... or join the one created by the Westell? ... or something else? Will it be used only for backups or combination backups/NAS?

The Westell isn't wireless, so there is only one wireless network: the one provided by the TC. She wants the TC for backup and wireless access throughout her apartment--which is very good whenever the computer gets online. Amazingly good, I might add.

Ok, thanks for clarifying that for me.
Since the TC will be connected directly to the Westell Gateway, you will effectively have two routers in series. In this case the TC should be reconfigured as a bridge (Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)) so that the Westell will continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for the entire network.
In this configuration, all clients (wired or wireless) connected to the TC, should be DHCP clients so that they get the proper IP information from the Westell. The TC is now basically a "pass-thru" device and performing as both a Wireless Access Point (WAP) and an Ethernet switch.
Are clients connected to the TC by Ethernet also experiencing the same problems as wireless ones?
