HELP!!! I need to configure a static IP and I have no idea how that works
Posted: Nov 2, 2009 12:35 PM

So I can't download anything on bittorrent anymore (it just stalls), nor does my new wireless printer print if I am trying to print anything wirelessly (except for a diagnostic report so I know its not a hardware issue). I did some searching and found that I need a static IP to resolve the problem.

I tried following some advice in forums for manually changing the IP from System Preferences > Network, and after doing so my printer started working like a charm (I know this is the resolution!) however, I was not able to connect to the Internet anymore, forcing me to go back to the automatic IP

I'm running on Snow Leopard, a MacBook Pro, and and Airport Express.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Welcome to the discussions!

Can you clarify if you are now able to get a good, reliable internet connection using the AirPort Express and your MacBook Pro?

If you can, please open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon and then click the DHCP tab just below the icons.
What is the value in the DHCP Beginning Address Range?
What is the value in the DHCP Ending Address Range?
DHCP Lease settings?

The DHCP Reservation Box will display any devices with a fixed IP address. Is there anything displayed in that area?

Yes I am able to get a good clear connection. No problems on that front.

Beginning Address: 10.0.1.2

Ending Address: 10.0.1.200

DHCP Lease: 1 day

OK, thanks.

Now, we will need to get the MAC address of each of the devices that you wish to assign a fixed IP address to.

It's usually on a label on the bottom of the device. You don't need to reply with them, just jot them down and keep them handy.

Example: 00:25:3B:02:FD:1B

The next step is to return to the same page in AirPort Utility as before.

Click the "+" button at the bottom of the DHCP Reservations box.
Type a description of the device, for example "HP Printer"
Click the Reserve by MAC address button
Click Continue
Enter the exact MAC address for the device
IPv4 Address...Choose an IP that is above the normal range of IPs assigned to your computers, etc. You could use 10.0.1.20 for example.
Click Done

Add other devices the same way. The next device would be assigned an IP address of 10.0.1.21 for example, etc.

When you have entered all the devices you need (you don't need to add your computers unless you specifically want to), click Update to save your settings for the Express.

Now power down your entire system. Then start the modem first for a few minutes, then the Express, your computers and devices. You should be good to go.

Post back on your progress and I will give you another tip.

Hey, I tried those steps exactly and its still not working.

The only thing that ever made it work was configuring a static IP through networks under system preferences.

Problem was, it wouldn't let me connect to the internet, and I'd have to revert back. I was just following some random tips for such configuration i googled, so I don't think I was being precise for my system.

Do you know if your devices that need a static IP need a certain range?

For example, instead of 10.0.1.x they may require 192.168.1.x

The changes that you made in the Network pane may also be causing a conflict. Can you return them to their defaults?

Well yeah, I mean when it disconnected me from the Internet, I reverted the network settings back to their original state. I do not know if a certain range is needed.

I am using a new HP Officejet pro 8500. I know the printer works becaue I got it from a friend who used it once on one of his office computers and it worked (I'm not sure what computer) Also the wireless works totally fine when I use the software to print a diagnostic report. Its just printing anything else that doesnt work. Only worked when I set it momentarily to that static IP.

Please help :(

Apple's step by step instructions are on pages 31-32 in the Airport Networks guide. Please review them and review your settings. I can't offer any more than the instructions to setup fixed IP's for your devices.
