Trackpad button is not working properly
Posted: Nov 22, 2005 4:53 AM

Hello everyone!

I have purchased a new PowerBook G4 15" about a week ago and found that trackpad button is pretty hard to work with: it is much "stiffer" than the one on my old PowerBook (also 15" aluminium, 1.5GHz) and it will not work properly, onless I push it with full force. By "not working properly" I mean it would either not work at all some times (I click it, there's a sensible click, but no actual click happens), or more often it would work as double- or triple-click.

I have took the new PowerBook back to the store and they have replaced it. The second one has exactly the same problem, only not as bad as the first one. So to work with it I have to give it a pretty strong punch each time.

Does anybody else have this problem or is it just me so pathologically unlucky?

Thanks!

Not the same problem, Farlander, but a problem trackpad button. When clicked at the outermost end, closest to the user. The button goes down in two steps. At the other end the button goes down fine in one step.
My powerbook is a new 1,67 15 (W8541P3XSWZ) inch which I have used in 14 days. The trackpad button on my old 1,25 g Pbook worked flawless all the time. espescially on doubbelclick this is anoying. Is this button sometyhing that can be replaced through the guarantee?
My freind has a pbook 17inch and that trackpad has a harder button resistanse that mine has.
Maby it should be possible to order the button as soft, medium, hard.

Take it back to the store and have them replace it as DOA. The new thing should work like new, without any glitches - that's why you pay almost twice the price of an equal (in terms of power and features) PC.

It seems that after a couple of days of vigorous punching of the trackpad button it has become much better: fewer jitter (double-clicks when you click just once), less lost clicks (when the click doesn't register). I have also tried pushing it down hard and trying to shift it sideways for a few seconds.

I suspect that maybe the contact material is not good enough and gets covered by an oxide film if not used often.
