Solved

You and your mouse problems ;O)

Get a very slightly damp cloth (lint free, i.e. one that doesn't shed fibres everywhere) and press firmly down on the button, then roll it around for a while.

It's probably accumulated dirt.

I have the exact same problem. My Might Mouse (less than a month old) will scroll up, left and right, but not down. It just happened all of the sudden.

I just used iKlear to clean the ball and it's working again now. Must be dust or grime from usage.

Ditto on the dirty mouse ball.

Have had the Mighty Mouse for a few weeks, and the "down scroll" just stopped functioning. As in other posts, the "UP," "LEFT," and "RIGHT" were unaffected.

After cleaning the pointer ball, the "DOWN" funtion has been restored

mine worked for a while and all of a sudden just stopped working !
unplugging and plugging back solved the problem until it won't scroll down again !
other directions weren't affected !
now it won't scroll down at all !!
tried to clean and it won't do anything !
will give it back to the apple tech near me !
I mean, come on Apple, i'ts only 3 months old and not working already !!
my intellimouse has 5 years old and it's still scrolling perfectly !!!
maybe they want us to buy a disposable mighty mouse !

I suspect this is going to become a big problem for Apple in the months and years to come.

I bought a Mighty Mouse right away and knew there was going to be some problems.

Humans produce oils that keep our skins soft, there isn't any pores on our hands, so we pickup oil from other parts of our skin (like our faces) which is used to transfer the oils around a bit. (fingerprints are oil prints)

Unfortunately it collects on devices like mice and in hot tubs where it hardens and in the case of MM, on the little scroll pea and the rollers inside.

For 20 years I've cleaned mice, the one with the roller ball underneath and the rollers always got gunked up, requiring a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol or simply scrapping it off with a Xacto knife.

So what to do in your case? Take a cotton cloth with a touch of rubbing alcohol, flip the mouse over and rub the scroll pea.

Pray to Cupertino that your rollers are not gunked up because there is no way to get inside without busting the mouse open and doing permanent damage.

You can see here

http://homepage.mac.com/hogfish/PhotoAlbum2.html

If cleaning the mouse fails to work, call Apple with a warranty call and insist on a regular mouse replacement.

I don't think the scroll pea is going to last long either, there is just too much going on with it, too much wear and tear, to suspect to getting filled with dirt and grime and it's too soft.

It should be a trackpea, hard, removeable so it and the rollers and the cavity can be cleaned properly.

Time will tell, but it might be **** for Apple.

I'm surprised there is still no official recommendation from Apple. I'm on my second Mighty Mouse so far, and this one has required cleaning several times, but I'm just waiting for the day when like my 1st one, cleaning no longer cures it...

Ah, just found article 302417, however this didn't work with my first Mighty Mouse, and I'm sure that this hit and miss recommendation isn't going to keep working indefinitely.

I used a can of compressed air for cleaning electronics to restore my downward scroll. Spray the air from about two inches away at full blast while rolling the scrollball around (in all directions) with your thumb/finger. Seems to have worked just fine.

The link for the article bilbo_baggins mentioned:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302417

I've had this problem too, where the scroll ball will work in all directions except scrolling down. I can generally get it going again just by scolling it a few times at a slight diagonal, and then straight down.

Thanks to ds store from posting that link with the pictures of the MM's innards!

reply, in the month I had it it happend two times for me!

The first time I plugged it into my brothers iMac and it started to work,
the second time, just now I cleaned it with air and cloth, after awhile it stopped working.

The thing is the mouse didnt even look dirty, so it must be super sensitive!

I had the same problem. Cleaning worked.
