i switched to mac just 6 month ago and i was on PC for 15 continuos years. i would like to say all of you that i have 3 busy acounts (about 20 letters per day per account) and during 15 years i NEVER had such crazy problem. now... i tired from that repeating password requests, which are about 3 times per day and i do not have SBC account.
So, it is not SBC problem - it is MAIL.app problem. Same mail account nevar asked me for the password on PC.

Hi Steve,
I can safely say this is a problem with SBC.
Windows has the same issue. Therefore, don't waste your time troubleshoting keychain or Mail.
This issue happens with different OSes and mail clients.

Possible solution:
Open the preference file, com.apple.mail.plist, in property editor simply by double clicking this preference file. You will need to delete some of the delivery accounts. You may want to make a copy of this preference first to re-use if your editing goes bad. Once it is open in property editor, click the "root" disclosure triangle. Then scroll down to "delivery accounts" and click that disclosure triangle. Click the disclosure triangle of each numbered item to determine which one or ones you want to delete. Mine showed multiple smtp accounts including some discontinued .mac accounts. Some showed that authentication was on and others showed that it was off. In my case I needed to have it off. I deleted all but one account and Mail has been working for me for several days. I have it set to check mail every 5 minutes. I was having the same problems as the rest of you folks had. My service provider is a cable company called Astound. The problems began on 12/1/05.

This problem is not happening with other mail clients
or operating systems.
Yes it is. I'm a Systems Administrator that works with Linux, Solaris, Windows, etc. I've seen this happen before (my own experience).
Please stay out of this thread if you don't have
anything useful to add.
I'm a serious person and I don't mess around like you mistakenly assumed. I've seen this issue in Thunderbird running on XP.
You don't come here and ask people to stay out when all they
are doing is trying to help.
Watch your languange pal!

It does seem to be a problem with SBC. Here's a thread from DSL Reports.com
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,14943570
that covers similar issues. HTH

gurp, this is very interesting! Seems like it is indeed an issue with SBC/Yahoo servers. Frustrating that all the calls others have made to SBC support have just been stonewalled, for whatever reason....
Now let's hope they can fix it so we can all stop attending to the bouncing mail icon. I see mine dancing behind this Safari window right now. Grrr!

I have SBC Yahoo DSL also . I can not recieve mail , for awhile it asked for a password (it has been doing this for months despite the fact I tell the keychain to remember it) then it stopped asking and mail stopped coming in (2 days ago). I emailed myself and checked at the Yahoo mail site with Safari and it showed up so mail goes out .
SBC said the first time I called that it was thier problem and it would be fixed in a few hours . When I called today they said it was Apples problem and Apple wants $50 to talk so I guess I have to go to SBC directly and use thier awful mail system .

Hello Bob.
When SBC said this is an Apple problem, did you ask why or in what way this is an Apple problem?
If not, please do and provide what you were told here.
I would also ask BC why some Windows users have reported the same.

You asked "When SBC said this is an Apple problem, did you ask why or in what way this is an Apple problem?"
They simply said we don't support apple applications . The mail works fine on your SBC mail page so it must be your Apple Mail .

Thanks.
As I'm sure you are aware when SBC says they don't support Apple applications, this only means none of their support staff have Macs in order to provide support with any OS 9 or OS X applications.
The mail works fine on your SBC mail page so it must be your Apple Mail .
This is wrong and inaccurate. SBC is or was having problems and they are notorious for not providing their customers information beforehand when important changes are implemented or all of their support staff not being aware when these types of problems occur.

This is a SBC problem. For all you SBC Apple users I'd recommend keeping the SBC webpage (for trouble shooting) bookmarked. The folks you get on the phone at SBC are usually no help. Awhile back SBC required their customers to change their ID to include the whole thing. I called SBC because I wasn't sure where to do this on my Powerbook G4. The guy there was totally clueless, and I ended up figuring it out for myself (Mac's Rock) so the guy begged me to tell him how I did it so he could write it down for when others called in, LOL.
Here is the SBC website discussion on this. There is another thread on it too, but the other thread is mostly posts by Outlook users:

Following my last and only post regarding this problem, I set my mail to manually check for new email. I have not had the problem since. While this is certainly not a reasonable solution, it has prevented that annoying popup from driving me crazy. I will be watching for a post with a solution. Perhaps someone will be able to break through the SBC barrier and convince them this is their problem, if that is the case; however, the Windoz machine belonging to my roommate still has not experienced this problem, so...

"You don't come here and ask people to stay out when all they

This is not your personal playground to derail serious discussions of problems with Apple's Mail application. The fact that you have had password rejections in other apps and OSes is of no relevance to this specific problem with Mail.
