You've done it, Francine! My 'Macintosh HD' icon is back on the desktop and in the Finder and I've been able to trash the alias! Thank you very much!

Glad it worked. There seems to have been a mini-epidemic of disappearing drives lately, so it is good to know that at least in some cases it is the result of the visiblity bit getting changed, and that it can be changed back. Of course, one does wonder what in the world is causing this in the first place!
