Is there any definitive view yet on whether the Intel version of OSX runs Classic?

Thanks

Hi Nigel;

It is my understand that Intel based MACs will not support Classic.

It is also my understanding that OS X 10.5 will not support Classic on any platform.

The days of OS 9 are numbered.

Nigel,

I heard that too, but is this definitive from Apple? I have an application that requires OS9, and somehow need to keep Classic mode working for a while.

Can someone from Apple give us the real answer?

Thanks!!

Hi neuroyates;

If you are currently able to run your application under Classic, then you all you have to do it not change anything and it should keep working for you.

I would be curious to hear which application it is that you must run in Classic still. I know I haven't used Classic for a couple of years now.

Forgive me for butting in, but here's my own answer to this question. I keep a copy of WordPerfect on my Mac because every month or two I have to open a document that someone has composed with WordPerfect for Windows. MS Word has never offered a translator for WordPerfect, so this is the only way I can open the file.

WordPerfect runs only on Classic.

I use Wordperfect for Mac daily. The best wordprocessor on the planet, overall.

The other ways to open Wordperfect files are with 1) AbiWord 2) MacLink Plus

I make my living using Apple software called Quicktime Virtual Reality Authoring Studio. It has not been upgraded in years yet it's still the best pano stitching software available on any platform, and it only runs in Classic. No other software even comes close to QTVRAS in terms of speed, workflow, and ease. I will lose money if I can't run this software for MANY years into the future. If Apple would simply update their own software to run in the newer OS I would buy it all over again.

I wonder if there's a chance that somebody will write a work-around software so that OS 9 apps can run on the new Macs? Otherwise the iMac I bought last month might have to last me 10 or 15 years.

Thanks to those who responded. I would be fascinated to get a response from someone who has had experience of the new system.

My two classic apps are QTVR authoring studio and, most important of all, Framemaker. I accept that there are other ways of doing QTVR now, but there is just no replacement for Framemaker. My feelings about Adobe and Framemaker would probably be justifiably censored by a forum moderator.

I suspect I am going to have to buy one of the last G5s off the production line to be able to keep going. Let's hope my vintage 2000 G4 keeps going anyway.

Thanks, Nigel

Solved

Hi Nigel;

Here is the latest update to exactly what is going to be supported by Rosetta. If you will read it carefully it states that Classic will NOT be support by Rosetta.

Thanks for the reference Allan. I'd go so far as to say a casual skimming of the article reveals that Classic is not supported on the Intel based platform ;-) Dust Puppy - userfriendly.com
