"A network error interrupted the connection to .Mac"
Posted: Apr 4, 2006 6:22 PM

I keep getting a message saying "A network error interrupted the connection to .Mac." I have tried to sync on different networks with different computers, and always the same result. I can sync iDisk and online stuff, but not calendars and contacts between computers. This is extremely frustrating and everyone else seems to be getting login errors, not what I'm getting. Help?

This began after 10.4.6

I'm also seeing this error. I did see it at times with 10.4.5, but with 10.4.6 it is consistent and prevents me from syncing.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just another voice with 10.4.6 with the same error. Have a PowerBook on 10.4.6 that can't sync at all and an iMac and a G5 still on 10.4.5 (or less) with no problems at all. Must be related to 10.4.6.

After upgrading to 10.4.6 I was also getting this error. Here is what I did to fix it:

1. In the .Mac pane of System Preferences, (.Mac tab) change the sync schedule to "Manual"
2. From the iSync preferences dialog (NOT System Preferences) click on "Reset Sync History"
3. Delete the .Mac password entry from your keychain (this seems to be the culprit!)
4. Back in System Preferences (.Mac) re-enter your password.
5. Synchronize manually. This will take a while. For each section (Calendars, Contacts, Bookmarks, etc.) it will ask you how you want to copy or synchronize the data.
6. Change back to your favorite schedule (I use "Automatic").

Hope this works for others...

I've had exactly the same problem, and I tried the soltuon provided but that didn't work either.

I also get another error in addition to the "A network error interrupted the connection to .Mac". After this error appears I get a "There was a problem with the sync operation. .Mac login failed" error as well.

I'm using the new MacBook Pro and thought it may have been an error with the new processor and network circuits, but it appears to be a .Mac and OS 10.4.6 problem...

Apple Support...where are you ?

Another one here...2 Powerbooks and 1 Macbook Pro get this error, but the Dual G5 appeared to sync properly. Error happens both with wireless networking hookup and ethernet cable, so that's not the issue... 10.4.6 has mostly helped out some major network problems, but this is a new one it seems.

Automatic syncing hasn't worked for several days. Getting same "network error" message AND a NEW message today...

"This computer is no longer registered to sync with .Mac - perhaps it was unregistered from another computer. Please re-register this computer using the .Mac System Preferences and try again."

then:

".Mac login failed."

Have NOT upgraded to 10.4.6

Just ANOTHER voice that is having problems, and have not upgraded to 10.4.6 yet. I get the same error messages and they repeat. Try it enough and it will eventually work, but you never know when or why. This has happened on three different computers on two entirely different networks.

Another note - doesn't matter if it is automatic syncing or manual.

I've tried resetting my .mac password. Things behaved very strangly and I got several warnings, but eventually the same problem showed up. Something seems to be corrupted.

I am syncing my iDisk on the system with the problem (iDisk copy kept on the local machine and synchronization set to manual). I suspect this is what is triggering the problem. Does anyone else have iDisk syncing turned on? Automatic or Manual iDisk synchronization seems to have effect.

Dual G5 not working anymore either, so I guess it is an intermittent thing. Interesting that some have had this since 10.4.5 and others just since 10.4.6...it seems to be something more than .mac servers if this information is correct.

I have the same problem today on a PowerBook G4 and a dual G5, both running 10.4.5 (yes, five). I got both error messages at different times. I tried the solution suggested above - it seemed to work on the PowerBook, but it did not work on the G5. We need help. Also, to retain some credibility (Apple's, not ours), some statement ought to appear on .Mac "System status".

Interesting, I sent an email to .mac and they aren't acknowleding ANY problem. In case it helps anyone, here's the dialogue so far...none of their suggestions had any effect, but hopefully others will let them know directly how much hassle we are having with this situation.

Anyway, here's what DOES NOT WORK in case this saves anyone a lot of time:

My response first, their suggestion below.

None of this worked. As noted, many others having problems since upgrading recently, in my case no problems with .mac sync at all until 10.4.6 for months. I DID have problems with wireless networking with a new Macbook Pro and older Powerbooks that was solved by the 10.4.6 update, but this is new for me.

Followed all steps that I could and got errors at each. Not sure which logs you would want to see, please advise if you need this information as I still have the test accounts.

Turned off all computers on home network. 10 minutes later turned on Dual G5 which has the updated and backed up synchronization information. After attempted sync received following error
.mac syncrhonization error
.mac login failed

Tried Reset Sync Data per instructions received following error:
unable to login in to the .mac synchronization server

Created new user test account, entered account information in .mac system preferences attempted sync received same error message as first attempt
.mac synchronization error
.mac login failed

Created second new user test account, open trial account on .mac, signed up, put two events into iCal, attempted to synch calendars and received these error messages
Unable to login to the .mac synchronization server
.mac log in failed
.mac sync error
.mac is not available at this time. Please try again later (these errors now going on 24 hours though)

Thank you for your assistance. It seems that many others have similar problems.

.Mac support letter to me:

Thank you for contacting Apple.

Most issues encountered with .Mac Syncing can be resolved by following a few basic steps. We realize that you may have tried many of these steps before, but it is important to try them in this order.

First, make sure your software is up-to-date. Mac OS X 10.4.6 is the latest version of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger available, and is recommended for all .Mac members who are using Mac OS X 10.4. You can update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 via Software Update. Click the Apple menu and choose Software Update in order to view all available updates for your computer.

Second, try turning your computer off for a full 10 minutes. If you have a home network with multiple computers, turn off those computers as well. After waiting 10 minutes, turn on one computer at try to sync again. If you are able to successfully sync, turn on your other computers and sync them one at a time.

If that does not resolve your issue, try a basic reset of your .Mac Sync data. This reset should always be done from the computer with the most current data.

Before resetting or deleting any data, you should make a backup of your data. For more information about backing up your important data, please see the following article:

Ho to back up and restore your important Mac OS X 10.4 files
<http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n301239>

To reset sync information:

1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
2. Click .Mac.
3. Click Advanced and then click Reset Sync Data.
4. Choose the information you wish to reset from the Replace pop-up menu (such as Bookmarks, Contacts, or All Sync Info).
5. Click the right arrow. The screen will change to say "On .Mac with sync info from this computer".
6. Click Replace. This will replace the information on .Mac with the information from your computer.

If .Mac Bookmarks or .Mac Address Book do not behave correctly after resetting your .Mac syncing information, you may need to reset their syncing preferences.

Reset .Mac Bookmarks

1. Go to .Mac <http://www.mac.com/> and log in.
2. Click Bookmarks and then click Open Bookmarks.
3. Click Preferences.
4. Deselect the "Turn on Bookmarks Synchronization" checkbox.
5. Click Save.
6. Click Preferences again, and reselect the checkbox.
7. Click Save.

Reset .Mac Address Book

1. Go to .Mac <http://www.mac.com> and log in.
2. Click Address Book.
3. Click Preferences.
4. Deselect "Turn on .Mac Address Book Synchronization" checkbox.
5. Click Save.
6. Open Preferences again, and reselect the checkbox.
7. Click Save.

Note that syncing does not display iCal data on the .Mac web site. Use iCal's publishing feature to publish calendars to the web. See iCal Help under the Help menu in iCal for more information.

To further troubleshoot this issue, please create a new Mac OS X user account and test to see if the error you reported occurs in a new user. In your reply please clearly state the results of these test and include the required log files.

Creating a new user in Mac OS X is actually quite an easy process; it will greatly assist in isolating the cause of the issue you reported.

Please completely review the following AppleCare support articles for more information about the use and configuration of multiple user accounts in Mac OS X:

Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Why does my desktop look different?:

Once you have created a new user, log out of your current user and then log in to your new test user account. Type in your .Mac user information in the .Mac System Preferences of the new user and then attempt to re-create the issues you originally described.

If you find that those issues still occur in the new user, please create a second test user account. Next, log out of the first test user and log in to the second test user account.

Go to the .Mac website, <http://www.mac.com>, from the second test user account and create a new .Mac trial account. After you have created the .Mac trial account, enter that account information into the .Mac System Preferences of the second test user.

After entering the trial account information into the .Mac System Preferences, attempt to re-create the issues you originally described.

After performing the requested troubleshooting steps, please respond to this email and let us know the results of those tests.

If the suggestions above do not resolve the issue you are having, please let us know. Please respond to this message with a detailed description of the troubleshooting steps you have taken: tell us, step-by-step, what you were trying to accomplish and provide the exact text of any error messages you have received.

Courtney,
