internal speaker output device missing

Hi,
I can't find a way to get the "internal speaker" option appears in the sound output device list in the system preferences/sound/output, the only option is "digital output".
Because of that, I can only have sound through headphones.
I'm trying to avoid backup and reinstall, it's kind of a pain to reconfigure every things...
So if anybody have an info about that it would be really helpful.

Hi,
no I don't have anything plugged in the audio jack, but the digital output (optical output that share the same plug as the audio jack) seems to be activated, in the sense where the red light is enabled if there are no speaker plugged. So maybe desactiving it would help.

I've just encountered the same problem (after I've updated the firmware). I've tried to reset the PRAM/PMU but neither fixed the problem. I'm still looking in the groups to see if anybody else has a resolution. The optical light is on, and analog output works, booting the internal speakers work, but only for the initial chime.

I sent back the computer, they fixed it, and apparently they changed the motherboard, the plug and other stuffs...

I am having the exact same issue.
I can't correlate it with anything in particular I did on the machine. I did do a Window (boot camp) install, but sound was coming out if the internal speakers just fine after that for several days.
I suspect that this is a driver issue.. perhaps the SigmaTel Audio driver on Windows changes some setting which the Mac OS X driver doesn't / can't / won't change back.
The odd thing is that this occurs quite early in the boot process.

I took it to the Apple Store.
It stumped the techs at the Genius Bar, and they wanted to take it off for hardware service people to look at, but they cited 5-7 working days for that and I am leaving the country in 3 days, so I'm just having to live with it for the moment.
NOT happy.

Well, between the 4 of us with the issue in this discussion, and at least 2 more people in this other one http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2310377#2310377, it seems this is not an isolated issue...

I should point out that audio output on the SAME machine works fine in Windows XP. The Mac startup chime also.
This has to be a bug in the Mac OS X kernel-level audio driver for the SigmaTel audio chip in this machine.. I have filed a bug via ADC (r.4546045) to see if we can stimulate any action on Apple's part.
In order to help identify why only some of us are experiencing this issue, please post here with answers to some of these questions:
* Can you correlate the start of the problem with anything you did on the computer (e.g. install software, etc.)?
- Have you ever booted Windows on the machine?
- Have you updated to MacBook Pro Firmware 1.0.1?
- First 5 digits of your serial number?
- Which MacBook Pro model? (Screen size and CPU speed).

Hi,
The speaker stopped working after I first plugged my head phone.
I never booted windows.
I did update the firmware (after the speaker stoped working).
This is a week 12, but since they changed stuffs in it I don't really know if the serial number means much now.

I've had this happen many times. The computer just seems to be confused, thinking there's a jack plugged in to the audio output when there is not. The quick fix: find a jack, plug it in, then take it out. Have system preferences/sound/output open while you do this, and you can confirm that it is fixed.

It would be nice if this is all it took.. but this does NOT cure this problem.
The problem immediately recurrs on unplugging the 3.5mm jack.
The problem occurs during the boot sequence.
I can't believe that this issue has not affected someone at Apple's machine. It is obviously a bug in the driver..

it just happened to me, i had no sound from the internal speakers while yesterday it was o.k.. after numerous puting the aerphones in and out after a restart the problem was over for now. i'm hoping it is a software bug and not hardware issue.

But was the digital optical output on (headphone jack emitting a red light) while the speakers were unavailable?
FWIW, I have seen a similar issue to that which you describe (temporary loss of internal speakers, fixed by plugging and unplugging the headphones a few times) but that is a different issue to what we are experiencing here, because in this case, it is as a result of the digital optical output being erroneously enabled.

I just had this exact problem and was able to fix it by inserting headphones back in to the headphone jack a few times until I saw the red light coming from the jack turn off. After it went off I had sound from my speakers again.
Actually I've now been able to reproduce the problem multiple times and have been able to fix it each time by inserting and removing the headphones until the red light turned off. If you look at the tip of your headphones when you put it close to the jack it will glow red if you have this problem. Once you no longer see the red light you'll know it's fixed.
