infrared/remote possibilities...

anyone know if either of these are possible...
1) I've got an infrared-capable PDA that can supposedly synch through infrared. Would the IR port on the MacBook allow this, or is that only for the remote.
2) could the remote be used to control other programs on the computer? I know it works for keynote, quicktime, dvd player, iTunes, quicktime, but how about other non-apple programs, like powerpoint, or even having it control safari (<</>>=back/forward, play/pause=reload...)
I think that, if not, Apple definitely could put more use into this remote thing. Also, I noticed that some old pwr-books had ir ports to share files, but the first iMac G3 had an IR port in front... this seems like a good idea for sending files from laptop to iMac, but maybe some going-backwards-adding-front-row-on-iMac-G3s in in order for Apple? Alright, who am I kidding, but it's an idea...

1.The infrared port on the MB is designed for the apple remote only. Nothing else will work with it.
2. I don't think that the remote will work with any other programs either. This being because you usually need to type commands or just type in other programs.

I use a program called iRed Lite for use with PP and VLC. You can pretty much set it up to run any program that you want.

To transfer files back and forth it is easiest to to it with the BlueTooth file exchange, that is, if your other computer has BlueTooth!
