In case anybody at Apple is counting the number of complaining customers, let me just add my voice to this thread.

I'm on my third Shuffle; this one lasted longer than the warranty period but eventually died. Nothing I've tried has worked (see my other post here for details: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2746100

yea me too, I had Portable Firefox installed on mine. It worked great, and I had to at least plugged it in and out of dozens of computers before I finally plugged it into my own computer; and thats when it stopped working.

Add me to the list...I turned my 1G Shuffle on and got green and orange. Mine was two months past the warranty date. I'm not writing off Apple yet (but I will). Surely they will acknowledge the problem and give us a break. If not...there is no way I'm going to buy another iPod for this to happen again. There are thousands of good MP3 players out there that work with Macs.
The shuffle has been great! It's not the lowest model (it's the most efficient model)...Small, simple, does what I need it to do. $100 was a good price for a quality product but I can't afford $100 a year. Surely this is not the type of company Apple is becoming!
Waiting for Apple to respond (but not much longer)!

I'm having this problem as well! Given that this post has been here for months with no word from Apple, that tells me that they just don't care. It's their "low end" product, and clearly sales for this product aren't making them the most money. Personally, I find it reprehensible to refuse support for a product you produce, so I'll never buy another Apple product. I just bought a Sansa Sandisk 2 GB MP3 player as well, and I'm thrilled with it. I think I'll buy another one of those for my husband, and throw away his useless piece of crap ipod.

After have the "flashing light of death" syndrome. I researched every possible way to fix my 1 GB shuffle. I tried the 5 R's, putting it on different macs and pc's, tried the ipod updater (but that won't work because the mac doesn't see it except in the system profiler and the pc's see it but either lock up or won't format it). I've read everything here and outside of here. I even went to a apple store and they turned me away because I have to make an appointment at the genius bar. That was 2 hours of my life sucked away since the nearest apple store is 40 minutes away. I decided to call phone support and after an hour of talking they gave me a no go on replacing it and said that they haven't heard of this problem before. Like they don't check their own forums.

I also own a 512 mb shuffle also which is working still but I am waiting for the "death lights" to come.

The funny thing is the apple store and the online store are considered 2 diffferent entities. The store offered a 10% discount on a new ipod with their recycling program. (Whoopee!) I said to the guy you are worse than a used car salesman. They also said that if the genius did look at it and considered it not good that they would probably sell me a refurb 1 gb for $50. I told them that they are out of their mind. My warranty expired and the unit lasted just over a year and they want more money. Nice.

I am very surprised at apple. This is the first time I ever had a problem. I've been buying macs since 1990. You would think that they would do something.

So my last resort right now, for doing it myself, is to wait for the battery to die and hopefully will erase everything and force it to come out of it's coma.

Good luck to you all. I'll post in a couple of days after the battery dies.

Well I have good news. I took a chance and made an appointment to see a genius at the genius bar at the closest apple store. He listened to my story about how the warranty has expired in february and I didn't think that I should have to shell out a single cent for something, that was expensive to begin with, for such a simple device. After listening to me he told me that apple has sold millions of ipod shuffles and there are bound to be broken ones. So I replied and said yeah but not everyone can afford to spend $150 a year on a music player. I didn't argue with him. We both had valid points but I kept on bringing up the discussion boards here and how people had similar problems. He also said when this happens the drives are fried and cannot be ressurected.

So what happened? He ended up giving me a new shuffle with a new warranty. I would try to go to a store and talk to the genius. The guys on the phones hands are tied. Like I said in my previous post, they are 2 separate entities bound by different rules.

I know this doesn't fix the problem but if you try hard enough there are people that will listen. You just have to take a chance.
Good luck all.

It's funny you should say that Eric. Just kidding. There are other people who also got a replacement. That's one of the reasons why I decided to try.

Anyone know what this 'Player Recovery Device Class' is?

I got a replacement for my 1st shuffle, used it for a little while as a thumbdrive. Then went to restore it with iPod Updator.

The updator 'failed to complete yadayada'.

now I'm sitting here with a dead shuffle, again.

No lights. Just a pop up trying to install what was displayed up there.
