Now running yes for over five minutes. The cooling fan is running. Doesn't reproducibly force a sudden shutdown event. Wish it were easier to demonstrate the problem.

Yeah, this is very depressing indeed. I was already on eggshells with my week 23 replacement (after my week 21 had died), but now I fear it's just a matter of time before it, too, starts randomly shutting down and impairing my productivity. And we move to Bangladesh on Monday, so this is something I cannot afford to happen at all. Apple needs to deal with this issue and either issue an update to fix the firmware/software problems OR issue a replacement policy that takes effect as soon as the problem can be confirmed. As it is now, I (and every other MacBook user out there) am flying blind, just hoping for the best. :(

You could try running it twice. yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null. As well you should run the activity monitor and watch your cpu load as it runs, as well probably the coreduo temp application. At 172 degrees, at 128% CPU load, I'm a dead duck. I currently have my macbook somewhat stabilized by putting one of those blue gel-type cold packs under the CPU.

Also I have from Apple a tool that will gather your stats for delivery to your Apple Care customer support rep.

CaptureData 7.0.5 -- It is a dmg that then created another dmg based upon your hostname, that you may then attach to a mail to the Apple rep. I hope this saves you all some time getting this resolved.

It's a problem with the thermal sensors. It's a Core Duo problem, Intel must figure out a fix for this. Until they do replacing your logic board is pointless.

Hi BRiPod.

Thanks for the feedback. Where do you get your information from? If it's the Core Duo thermal sensors that are the problem then why aren't the MacBook Pros, iMacs and Mac minis demonstrating this same problem?

Seems HIGHLY unlike it's just a CPU issue.

- I don't think there have been such widespread problem reports with other computers.

- google that chip errata you are quoting elsewhere some more; "core duo ae18"; you'll see that it's only a problem after resuming from sleep; folks here are having the problem after a cold boot. Also, speedit claims it can be worked around with firmware.

Same thing here - absolutely no problems when I don't have the battery in at all. Otherwise it sometimes goes all day, sometimes turns off after 20 mins, sometimes after 8 mins, sometimes only 30 seconds. And it's getting worse and worse, plus getting harder to start up each time.

Tried everything that's been suggested, no help. The only thing that keeps it on is taking the battery out and using it off power without that in.

What to do?

I think it is likely there is more than one type of sudden shutdown issue being reported in this thread. My MacBook would do sudden shutdowns even when cold. I had some instances when CoreDuo reported 43 deg C right after a sudden shutdown and restart.

Gotta give a positive nod to Apple and the folks in the Bellevue Apple Store. Instead of forcing me to go through another repair cycle, I was swapped out to a new MacBook. It was outside of the normal time frame, but I asked if they would do it and it was done to avoid further delaying me. That type of service is why I'm on my roughly 15th Mac.

This is far, far better customer service than we got from Porsche when my wife's new Carrera 4S had problems. Apple helps and I keep buying new machines and recommending Macs. I have a nice list of converts. Porsche basically left us high and dry and got themselves permanently removed from our garage and forever denigrated in our conversations about cars.

Hopefully, this week 25 machine does the trick.

Cold, hot, heavy use, just booting up, my week 21-build black Macbook has fits of random shutdowns. It's not the battery. It doesn't matter how many times I reset the PMU. There is no ryhthm or reason. It just happens. The Mac Center here in Seoul says to wait for a software update, but I cannot help but think this has got to be a defective hardware issue.

I'm also having shutdowns # 8 happened today, and mine started after installing 10.4.7 (I had hoped that update would fix the wireless connection dropping and mooing, but it only added more problems now).

I see no evidence that this is thermally related. I work in a cool space and the processor temp usually sits in the high 60s and low 70s, never once going over 80C. I've done thorough RAM tests and that seems to be working fine, though I have installed 2gb chips myself when I first got this about 6 weeks ago.

Since I've had 5 crashes in two days, I'm heading for AppleCare and hoping they won't give me a total runaround to replace this lemon.

Mine had the exact same shutdown cause; I ended up sending it in for a replacement. The guy at the Genius Bar guessed it was a faulty logic board, but I never officially had it diagnosed. Anyone else with this shutdown cause number have an official diagnosis?

My MacBook was sent in June 29th, the Geniuses at the store claimed to have seen nothing like it before. I was getting random shut offs about every 5 minutes, and this is before the 10.4.7 update. The computer ran like a dream for the first month of ownership. The computer was waiting on a MLB until July 21st and now I am told it is currently being repaired. Long time not to have the MacBook, this thing better come back to me looking a lot more like a MacBook Pro... It's been out for repair for almost a month now.

The same happened to me twice. My MacBook just turned off, and I have done nothing to make it turn off.

My Macbook (week 22) had the random shutdown problem. It was fixed by Apple. They replaced a logic board and a battery connector assembly. It took almost a month to have the computer back. The computer was working fine for almost a week after the repair. Unfortunately, today the problem returned. The computer randomly shuts down. A temporary solution is to keep power button down for a few seconds, until the computer beeps. Then it works normally until I put it to sleep. After waking the computer up, the problem comes back.

I suspect this is a design fault of the Macbook or a hardware problem in a large batch of logic boards. How sad.
