Lost my photos!
Posted: Aug 22, 2006 8:33 AM

Hi,
I have been using I photo 6 for about 6 months without incident when suddenly it refused to shut down then unexpectedly quit. Upon reopening it I discovered I had lost my last 2000 pictures. I have them backed up but would still like them back in I photo, any suggestions?

Steve:

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Look in your iPhoto Library/Originals folder and you should find all of your original files. The database file, Library6.iPhoto probably was damaged by the shutdown. You can recover your library but won't have the albums, keywords, slideshows etc. You will have the same rolls. Here's how:

1 - move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2 - copy the Originals folder from that library folder to the desktop.
3 - launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4 - drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However, some of the dates on the rolls may be different (the import date) but can be edited as you would the roll title.

In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup.

Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the library folder. If you want you can keep the older library folder to try other repairs on it but once that file is damaged there's little you can do.
Do you Twango?

If you still have your original iPhoto Library folder and it's intact, i.e. with the Originals folder inside and all, you can try using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild it. In doing so an entirely new library is created by copying the necessary files and data from the old library. It may work. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
  1. Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
  2. Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
  3. Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
  4. In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
  5. Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.

I had a similar problem when I tried to sync my new MacBook Pro with our desktop. I don't know if it was just coincidnec, but the same day I did the first sync, we lost all our photos and music.

I could not find an originals file in the iPhoto Library...any advice?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

While it's possible to share photos, you cannot sync library files between computers without database corruption.

I could not find an originals file in the iPhoto Library...any advice?

But where exactly did you look? There is no Originals file, it's folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. That's inside your Pictures Folder.

I was not trying to sync library files, just simply get our address book, and calendars in sync.

I looked in the Pictures folder for an originals folder, and tried finding it in the trash as well. It does not seem to be anywhere accessible with my limited skills.

I appreciate your help, and will take any advice you may have.

1. How many user accounts on that machine?

2. In each account do a search:

In the FINDER, type -f, set the search to 'Computer' and

Kind -> Images

Size -> Greater Than -> 100kb

See if that finds your pics.

Old Toad,
Need your help. I too have lost all my photos, my library is empty any thoughts? Like the other person my iPhoto opened and it took ages trying to find my photos, there was around 2500 of them, at the end of it searching it came up blank. I rebooted and again no photos.
Unfortunately I was just about to back them up....
Hope you can help, thanks

Try rebuilding the library:

Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.

If that doesn't work: Have you moved, altered or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder in your Pictures Folder?

I have thumbnails in the library, but nothing comes up when I try to edit the photos.

I am the only user on my computer (Powerbook G4, OS X 10.3.9). I did the search as described and came up empty (just images that came with the computer or were kept separate from the iPhoto (4.0.3)library. Is there hope here?

Synartis

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.

You're posting in the iPhoto 6 forum. You might have luck posting in the v 4 forum here:

http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=845

however, if the photos aren't there it's hard to see how they can be recovered. They should be in the iPhoto Library Folder (in your pictures folder).
