after two hours with Apple, they don't admit to having any knowledge of this issue and my iPod is finally on its way -- FROM CHINA!
Even i hear a small-minute-tiny buzz, i'm sending it back. i'm gonna give apple ****, this is so frustrating.

Of course it's from China. All iPods come from China and they are made there as well. I believe all shipped iPods have a Chinese address on the box.

Same problem here on 8G nano. Will wait until Apple admits to the problem, comes up with a solution and ships replacements that no longer have this defect. I have better things to do than to waste hours on hold to explain a problem they already know about (just look a the amount of entries in this discussion!!!).
I don't suppose they will contact me.....

don't wait.. just send it back and say it emits the noise or if you can, just get the money back.. Today I went to a shop buying a new one (they said I have 30 days to return it if I didnt want it) so I just bought it and opened the box to see if it emitted the noise which it didn't. I also bought an insurance for like 30$ for 3 years of breaking. At monday I am gonna send the other one back..

All iPod nano's work with flash drives, so no they don't got hard drives. Nobody actually knows for sure what's causing it except maybe engineers at apple (at least i hope they do by now).

I have a new (less than one week old) 4 GB 2nd Gen. Nano, and it is totally silent, except for when I operate the wheel.
One or more of 3 things can emmit such a sound:
the internal speaker,
[snip]
I was wondering how far I'd get in this thread before somebody mentioned the speaker. What is it, a piezoelectric device? Whatever they used, it certainly is a "moving part" even if it doesn't move very far. Whether or not it's the source (notice I didn't say "cause") of the whine is another matter.
Now, of those who have a whining iPod, how many have the Clicker set for "Speaker" or "Both"?
Does changing the Clicker Speaker to "Off" change or eliminate the whine?
About that .wav recording of the whine that someone posted - is the click at one-second intervals part of the iPod noise, or just the ticking of a clock in the same room?

My brand new Nano 2G 8GB is making this buzzing noise.
I've only started charging it, and not done anything else yet with it...
Maybe I am part canine, but the noise is very annoying, and quite loud.
Just picked mine up this afternoon in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Will be going back to the store tomorrow to return it

Just got my 4 gig nano a few days ago, and it does have the whine. Its not too audible in most situations, but it's pretty clear in quiet rooms. An interesting thing I noticed-it's louder when it is in direct contact with my desk than when I am holding it. It's hard to hear with headphones. Perhaps it is part of a plot to create a headphone dependency.
