iTunes CPU load spike bug isolated
Posted: Nov 16, 2006 9:36 AM

I'm having a problem with the 7.X line on XP SP2 that I never had with earlier versions. Some songs will cause 100% CPU load at the end of the track. After much fiddling around and a few chance discoveries, I've isolated the problem down to a few variables.

First, this is hardware or driver dependent. It happens at work on my Dell P4 with onboard Analog Devices SoundMAX chipset. Second, the problem only happens when audio transitions from audible to silence, as often found at the end of tracks.

I'm attaching a sample file that will trigger the bughere. Save it, add it to iTunes, and play from the beginning.

As I said, some hardware doesn't exhibit this bug. My AMD machine at home with nForce audio doesn't show the bug. Also, you must play from audio into silence. If you seek into the middle of the silence and play, you won't see the bug.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to work around this or get the bug pushed onto the iTunes bug queue? I'm about to dump iTunes at work and try (shudder) WinAMP.

Buying an audio card would probably fix the problem but as this is a work machine, I don't want to drop any money on the problem.

Thanks for any tips.

It appears to be pretty common. I posted the same question to mefi and I got a lot of reasonable but unhelpful suggestions. There were several "Me too"s as well so maybe if we rattle some bars Apple will wake up.

Do you get the same behavior if you play the affected songs in QuickTime Player?

As I recall, no. I do remember explicitly testing this but I cannot test it now as I downgraded to 6.0.X.

I sent you mail too with more information. Thanks for responding.

I am having the same exact problem. My PC freezes for the duration of silence in a track. It becomes very annoying in tracks where there are long periods of silence like at the end of a cd before a "hidden track".

just chiming in here - same problem. At about the last 2 seconds of every song I get locked for a few seconds and then it moves to the next track. This is really annoying as I am listening to music on my work machine.

Fixed by upgrading to a new PC.
