Defective/loose plastic case?

I just bought a Macbook about a month ago. A few days ago, I noticed that the left side of the case near the front where two small screws are is loose. When you push on the plastic is pushes inwards. At first I thought that maybe the screws were loose. I check them and they weren't loose nor were they too tight. Has anyone had this problem or know what I should do? Do all Macbooks have this same problem? I don't remember the notebook doing this when I first bought it. I tried to tighten the screw but that didn't make a difference. I'm very upset that this is going on with a brand new notebook.
Any help on what I should do would be greatly appreciated.

Hey,
This seems to be a frequent "issue" lately. It seems that the case does have a small amount of movement when pushed upon. My Macbook has a little give when I press down the area that you are referring to. I wouldn't be too concerned unless of course the top shell is actually prying away from the case. If the problem really gets to you, go to the Apple Store and have a Genius diagnose the problem.

The top section seems to be ok and has no movement. It just seems to be the side if pushed in. I hope it doesn't get any worst. It's a shame though that it is happening.
Thanks for your feedback.

I have had my white 13" MacBook for only a few weeks and have also noticed that the plastic at the front left side by the ports is slightly bowed out and is not rigid like the righthand side. It creaks when pressed. There are two screws which appear to be fully driven home but are obviously not fixed to anything rigid - perhaps they are too short? Has anyone had this resolved or should we just live with it? I'm off to find a dissection of a macbook on the web to enlighten myself.
Whilst this has no effect on the functionalty, it is disappointing and suggests poor quality control. My unit originated in China - is this a common link?

This has been discussed before. I had the same concern, but it turns out the screws are for decorative/cosmetic purposes only, and serve no function. As for the flexing, it seems to be because there is nothing directly behind the screws, but it doesn't signify a defect.

If it is not be a 'defect' then it is a design fault i.m.h.o., as it has caused concern and detracts from the experience of using the macbook. The iBook has an aluminium frame around the battery bay to provide rigidity - why not the macbook? Having owned Macs since the Apple II in the 80's, this is not what I expect.

Hy there!
Obviously this is one example of Apple famous building quality. Beside all this other little things as:
dying batteries, defective TFT's, temperature issues, poor plastic quality, moohing and so on.
This is not what I expected to get when buying a mac and paying a high-class price. Sorry Apple, but it seems that only the famous design is what outlasts the years...
Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you all.

I hate to say it, but I have to totally agree with you. I never had this problem with my HP notebook. It was built very well.

It's not a design flaw. The case flexes a little because there's nothing directly behind the screws, which are there for cosmetic purposes only. Apple's quality is still the best in the industry. Things like exploding batteries and bad lcd screens plague all computers, not just the ones made by Apple. The only reason you hear more about Apple is that they're the media's darling and punching bag, so they get more scrutiny than Dell, HP, Lenovo, and the other Windows computer makers.
As for why the MacBook doesn't have a metal frame, most modern laptops have abandoned metal frames in favor of lighter weight and lowered costs. If you don't mishandle your MacBook, it should last just as long as any other laptop on the market.

I know, it annoys me that the side of the laptop I paid a lot money for just bends in but its like that on all of them so what are we to do.

Of course it is a design flaw! The constant flexing may be responsible for fatigue and work hardening of the plastic resulting in the many cases reported where cracks have appeared near the corners of macBooks. If the right hand side is rigid, then the left hand side should also be made rigid. The use of magnesium or aluminium frames does not make for heavy laptops.

I also have the ability to push in the left side of my MB where the ports are but it doesn't bother me. Also I can push in on the white border surrounding the screen on the middle right side. It makes sort of a clicking sound everytime I push it in. It might be a similar thing or maybe its just my MB... I dunno.
