iTunes won't recognize authorization (Vista compatibility issue?)
Posted: Jan 30, 2007 10:02 PM

So I updated to Vista today. iTunes seemed to work fine with it, except for one thing: Whenever I try to play one of my purchased songs, I get told that my computer is not authorized. So I enter my password and am told that my computer has now been authorized. I try to play the song again. "Your computer has not been authorized." Dang.

I try deauthorizing and reauthorizing, closing and opening iTunes, restarting the computer. Nothing works. What should I do?

To get it to work I went into the iTunes folder in Program Files and the right click on iTunes and Run as Administrator. Then go in an Authorize. It Worked for me.

Even better...

From Vista, right click on the iTune.exe program icon located in the iTune folder in the Program File folder and select Properties. Click on the Compatibility tab and enable the "Run this program as an administrator" checkbox. Click on OK.

Next time you run iTune it will automatically run under administrator privileges, this fixes the problem until Apple comes up with a Vista only version.

BTW, I ran into similar problems with other XP prgrams that would not run quite well under Vista. The same trick fixed all issues.

iTunes only needs administrator privileges once to write the authorization to disk (Vista appears to have locked the old "My Music" folder). After that, you can run it normally so you don't have to deal with the UAC popup every time you start iTunes.

I installed iTunes without a hitch, and when I tried to authorize my account, it worked perfectly, without usign the run as admin workaround. I think either side has given in and made it click.

Funny thing about iTunes for vista is that only the main window has the correct frame, all the rest deffault to the vista frames. (Yay :( )

btw, the "other OS" is vista

I am having the same problem after upgrading to iTunes 7.0, but I am running XP. I tried running iTunes under sdministrator, but it does not recognize a password that I supplied. is there a specific password for accessing my PC with administartor rights? Thanks in advance.
