MacBook restarts when closing the lid

Not always but frequently the MacBook restarts when closing the screen. in other words, when I close it it's supposed to just go to sleep but we hear the restart chime and when I open it it's starting up back to the login windows. Not very safe for unsaved items. Its happened a few times this week and a couple of times last night. I have the Black 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo. Anyone know about this? Just wanted to do some research before making the call for service. Only had this for about 2 weeks.

I've got a similar unit, but never had shut down issues when I close the laptop. With not having it too long, you've got 2 options - take it into an Apple, or try and find the issue out yourself. Personally, I'd try and reload the OS from scratch (if you haven't put too much stuff on it), and see if it's still doing it. If it still does it, certainly take it to an Apple store if possible - have one of the genius' look at it.

Sorry for the long absense. I also wanted to mention that I'm getting quite a few Kernel Panics, two yesterday and one a few days ago. The mouse gets stuck for a while, I would try moving the mouse with the mouse track and it wouldn't go anywhere for a while, just frozen then after about 30 seconds it moves. Will try a few things and if I have to will do a reinstall of OS X then call Apple. or I might just call and see what they say. will post updates.

Same problem here too, on my 2GHz white MacBook. It's not been a problem previously (I've had the machine a month or two), but it's happened three or four times today ... but not every time. I think I'm describing the same snag: I close the lid, but when I open it again, rather than seeing what I last left, I see the second boot-up screen and everything has to reload. By second boot-up screen I mean blue background and the grey square in the middle with the Apple logo and a blue progress bar. It's not quite the same as a complete reboot, when the first thing I see is a grey screen with the 'spinning daisy'.
In reverse order, here are the only significant changes I can think of:
I installed 2G RAM a couple of weeks ago, seemingly without hitch
I keep all software patches up-to-date: there was a system-wide Tiger one a few days ago?
This morning, my machine said that dotMacTranslator needed keychain permission, to which I agreed. I've never seen that before. Googling told me that this is triggered by Mail noticing a new account being set up ... but I've not done that.
Any more news?
Thanks
Brinley

Simply adding to the number: I am having the same issue too. My MacBook is the white 2GHz Core2Duo with 1 GB 667 MHz. Two Kernel panics so far and two self restarts when I closed the lid. No peripherals and no extras on this box.
I plan on taking this box in Monday to the Apple Store, I'll hope to able to update you with some news.

This just happened to me about 5 minutes ago, of course my first instinct was to jump on the discussions here to see if it was something I did. Really upset me as I had a rather large project I was working on and hadn't saved it in the last ten minutes.

Sorry no news from here. I can't be without my laptop either. I went to the Apple Store on Monday as promised and unfortunately without an appointment. As a result they wouldn't see me before several hours later, so I just left without being seen. I did however open a case with Apple via telephone.
Other new, weird, and unexpected behavior is that I noticed that the BT wireless mighty mouse can and will wake computer and move things around when lid is closed too.

I've had this issue on at least two of the three Macbooks I've had. Most recently it's happened on my current machine a couple of times, but only since adding an extra Gig of RAM. Whether or not that's the cause I don't know, but this machine was fine for the first 2-3 months before the upgrade (A full hardware test comes up without any faults though, memory or otherwise). I'm going to do exactly what I did before, and call Apple support directly. IF you can manage to get your existing machine next to a replacement, you can copy over the entire HD contents in minutes!

Have the problem here w/ Black Macbook w/ 2GB Ram. It happens randomly but frequently enough -- at least a couple times a week.
Are there any logging utilities that could be used to help debug these crashes?
