If the PB is plugged into AC and the cover is closed, can the USB port still be used to charge an external device (eg. ipod)?
Thanks

A PowerBook will not supply power over the USB ports when it is asleep, but will over FireWire while it is awake or if the computer is plugged in. If the PowerBook is awake, power will be provided over USB.

Niel,
So, if the PowerBook is plugged in but cover closed and asleep then the USB port is powered?
Thanks

The USB port is not powered on a PowerBook when the computer is asleep. Providing power over USB requires that the CPU be active to arbitrate power requests.

Hi Ken,
when your powerbook or ibook is in sleeping mode, the USB ports are switched off and are not charging. If you have a FW to iPod cable, this will provide power for charging even if the computer is in sleep mode. This is even so when like with the newer iPods FW cables cannot be used for data transfer. I have just tested this myself using my powerbook and my 5th generation iPod.
Also, you can always check whether your iPod is being charged yourself, by watching the display! If there is this electrical spark symbol visible on top of the battery icon, then it is being charged!
Regards,
Bernard
