WARNING - Bug in iTunes 7.2 - Will No Longer Load All MP3s Into 60GB iPod
Posted: May 30, 2007 6:19 AM

I upgraded my iTunes to version 7.2. Unfortunately, iTunes refuses to load 101 mp3 songs that formerly played on my iPod Video 60 GB onto my iPod. These were songs that I purchased from iTunes in the last year, burned to a CD and then ripped back into unprotected MP3 format. iTunes gives me an error message that states that these MP3s are in a format this not readable by the iPod.

I did a restore of the iPod, but this did not fix the problem.

Sounds like Apple found a way to disable this former "feature" in a further effort to screw over it's customers. This is just the info I was looking for. I won't upgrade my iTunes yet.

The error message I get for these MP3s is:

"[Name of Song] was not copied because the file type is not supported by the iPod. . . . "

Each of these MP3s were based upon protected AAC files purchased from iTunes, burned onto a CD using iTunes and then ripped back into iTunes with iTunes.

All of these MP3s were in my iPod prior to 7.2, but then deleted once I did my first sync in 7.2.

All of these MP3s remain playable in iTunes - just not in my iPod.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

I too have this same problem. Strangely enough, it is 101 songs. Some of them are MP3s that I ripped from CDs I own, and some of them are MP3s made by buying AAC songs from iTunes, burning them to CD and then reimporting them into iTunes again. I think this is probably just a bug in iTunes and not an intentional move by Apple to prevent people from converting their AAC songs into MP3 format. In fact, I can say for sure that there are lots of songs that I did buy from iTunes which have been converted to MP3 format and *did* sync to the iPod... some are recent, and some are very old. That's why I think this is just a stupid bug.

My iPod is a 5th generation (video iPod) with firmware 1.2.1 (latest version).

Hmmm, that's curious. Did you edit or play the files outside of iTunes in another application? Have you played a couple of the files all the way through in iTunes to make sure that they haven't been corrupted -- sometimes files look ok in Windows explorer, but they're not.

If they play all the way through in iTunes, let's send 1 or 2 of them to the to Apple engineers and see what they make of them. Here's what to send --

(1) the file that won't download to the iPod.
(2) the link to this thread.
(3) a one line description of your problem, i.e. "iTunes 7.2 won't download all files to iPod".
(4) the username that you're using here in the discussion boards.
(5) tell him Toonz sent you.

Roy is getting a little swamped with messages and needs to make sure he gets all the information. And if he doesn't get that information, the message is just going to get dropped on the floor.

Not a fix but any reason you are not putting the original download onto the iPod instead of the lower quality MP3?

Converting iTunes protected AAC files into mp3 permits you to include your music in home videos that you create in iMovie and load the songs onto a mobile phone.

I don't see how this is happening. If the songs are burned onto an audio disk - and then ripped back onto the computer - there should be no way for iTunes or any program for that matter to know that they were once protected files downloaded from the iTunes store. It seems so unfathomable to me that this data would somehow make it all the way through these transcoding processes and be effecting the files ability to play on an iPod.

this is in fact very strange.

Okay, but that's not what I asked.

This is a very strange bug.

To be more precise:

I have a 17" Mac iSight G5 (1.9 GHz) with OS 10.4.9 installed.

This morning I upgraded from iTunes 7.1 to iTunes 7.2. After I upgraded, I went to sync my 5th generation 60GB Video iPod (firmware 1.2.1) and it would not import 101 mp3s (encoded in iTunes at 192kbs). All of the 101 songs play correctly in iTunes and continue to synch correctly with my Apple TV. Furthermore, all of my other mp3s and protected AAC songs synched correctly with the 60GB Video iPod.

I restarted the computer and restored the iPod, but neither fixed the problem.

The 101 songs all were protected AAC songs that I purchased from iTunes, burned onto a CD and then ripped back into iTunes. The songs were purchased from iTunes between 2004 and 2007.

I have had iTunes on Mac OS X since 2002 and have not had any prior problems with iTunes. My computer has no haxies, hardware or software modifications.

I have 116 GB of movies, television shows and music in iTunes which we sync with our Apple TV and 60GB iPod.

I have e-mailed Roy at Apple a description of the problem and a screenshot of the error message.

Thanks for sending in the sample file and other information. I was unable to reproduce the issue you're seeing using the file you sent on my computer. If you delete this file from your iTunes library, and add it back into iTunes, will it sync then?

That worked !! Don't know whether there's a better answer but I was having the same problems as all above and I've gone back to my backups and reloaded offending files into I-Tunes and they sync perfectly onto the IPod. Glad that's fixed. Thanks Roy.

This symptom may be caused by subtle corruption in the iTunes library, so you might just want to recreate the library from the XML library file.

The reason I convert to mp3 is the files are smaller, allows more songs on my 2GB Nano. (My 30GB iPod was stolen and I miss having my entire "library" at my finger-tips - sigh.)
