I use my iBook to play iTunes music through a Bose. Updating to 10.4.10 has caused the sound piped to the Bose to cut out and in and out and in. Bottom line: A really nice sound setup now is useless. A mere snap, crackle, pop wouldn't seem so bad. I'm desperate for a fix! I really don't want to go through a downgrade to 10.4.9. It has been a while since I had to do such a thing, but I still recall the lengthy and unpleasant process. Also, I have a G4 iMac in the same situation. Is there any help in sight yet?

I would like to add my name to the list of those affected this way by the upgrade to 10.4.10. Perfect sound with 10.4.9, cracks and pos with 10.4.10. I have late 2006 Intel iMac.
There is one suspicion that I have, that would perhaps be nice to confirm. All of us affeced have external speakers and most probably had them connected when performing an upgrade. I asked a friend of mine today to try and reproduce the problem on his MBP which doesn't usually have them connected and he was unable to. He heard no cracks.
Would someone who haven't already upgraded, volounteer to upgrade without speakers connected and see if cracks are still there?
I am fully aware it's a long shot and not sure if it would be of any help, but it would be interesting to know.
bkv,
Marko.

So far, I don't notice any problem when playing from iTunes with my receiver/speaker hookup; it only happens if nothing is going on, but the receiver is on.

Add mine to the list of popping Intel macs with 10.4.10.
Interestingly I get the popping on my Mini but don't on my MacBook Pro. The Mini has external speakers, MBP is running with the internal speakers.
I also tried the macfixit.com "fix" by replacing the IOAudioFamily kext with the one from 10.4.9. Didn't help, still pops. On the bright side doing this didn't crash the system either but I put the 10.4.10 kext back just in case...

Yes, because 10.4.10 is trying to keep the audio subsystem in 'power save mode' when not in use. When you are playing something in iTunes then it's not attempting to do that.

I installed mine with no peripherals/usb/speakers attached and I have the pop, so it's unlikely.

I can't notice it when my internal speakers are in use, but it is still there. Try hooking your external speaks to your MBP and see what happens.

I updated to 10.4.10 and my Firewire audio interface was no longer recognized. I have a mixer, microphone, and a Yamaha receiver hooked through it; and was not able to get it back on line. I ended up having to re-copy 10.4.9 from an external drive back to the internal. After that, it went back to normal operation. I don't believe I will update; just stay at 10.4.9.

Well I'll add myself to the "it happened with update" list- Intel iMac 20"
This morning, all fine NO popping. Around noon, ran update. All afternoon thinking I'm going bonkers. Cyclic "pop" in external speakers. Most low volume but noticable, occasional louder. Enough to be extremely annoying.
I previously only experienced this sort of pop when ceiling fan in bathroom next to computer room turns on/off. I seriously thought something was electrically crapping out in the house. Been looking all afternoon....
I guess no fixes yet?

Add another Mini with external speakers to the list of those affected by the kerplunk (really strong in the subwoofer).
The update was fine on 3 other (non-Intel) Macs. Sure messes up the media center Mini.

I just updated to 10.4.10, and thought everything had gone well until I heard a POP from the left speaker on my MacBook Pro 2.33 C2D. The POP comes just before any audio. Happens in QuickTime, iTunes, System sounds, everything. Then a softer POP about 30 seconds later.
To test the timing, I used the up/down volume keys.
The POP is with the internal speakers. I do not have external speakers attached. If I attach earphones, I still hear it, but the pop is very quiet.
The POP happens when running off external power, not just battery.
If you are having this problem, please send your feedback to Apple (They rarely read these discussions, but they do read feedback.) If enough of us report this problem, it ought to get fixed.

Hello Terrell. Thanks for reminding us to do that, just done it. I have done an Archive and install on one of my macs back to 10 4 9 and the Popping is still there, so i am at the moment doing an Erase and install to 10 4 9 on another to see if that sorts it. Has anyone performed a successful "go back" here thats resolved this issue?.Also, when i install updates i disconnect all peripherals inc. speakers so thats not the culprit.Cheers.

I am also experiencing the 'pop' from external speakers, while audio playback itself seems of poor quality. The pop occurs at random when there is no audio output happening, and occurs just before a system sound occurs. I am running a late 2006 c2duo Black Macbook. MacRumors forum about this issue: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=317289
This is extremely annoying- a prompt fix would be greatly appreciated, otherwise I will have to reinstall 10.4.9
