VPN Connect - Numeric Password Prompt?
Posted: Jun 30, 2007 12:13 PM

I set up the VPN (L2TP) (Settings->General->Network->VPN->Settings)and it initially connects and works fine. But when I later attempt to turn the VPN on again (Settings->VPN) the password panel only offers a telephone style keypad. Anybody know what's going on?

Same here. It connects once, then forgets the password.

Apple store geniuses had never actually used the VPN functionality before.

I too have this problem. I am using PPTP authenticating to a 10.4.9 server. The iPhone never remembers my password, and if I try to reconnect I get the numeric keypad instead of a keyboard.

Still love my iPhone though ;)

I filed it as a bug report with Apple. We'll see what they say. At least it works if I go back to Settings->General->Network->VPN->Settings and re-enter the password there.

Same here. The workaround I've been using is to not just switch on VPN, but each time you want to turn it on, go to:

Settings, General, Network, VPN, Settings and enter the password. Click save, and then turn VPN on.

I suspect this is a bug, although I don't know how/where to report it.

I too have the same problem with the numeric keypad. I find that if I just type a wrong password and submit it then prompts me with a username/password dialog with a full keypad.

After you all get connected to VPN does it work for you? I have tried with both PPTP and L2TP/IPSEC on different servers and no matter what after I connect I loose all data connectivity. On the VPN servers I see the connection to the iphone and it stays connected for as long as I leave it active but no data passes the tunnel.

No, I don't get that. If i enter a numeric password it goes to "VPN Connecting..." and takes a very long time to time out.

When I set the password in Settings though, I do get a VPN connection (I've only tried one server, via L2TP to an XServe running OS X 10.4.10) sometimes it's faster to connect than others but once connected it seems to hold on to the connection, even through sleeping.

I get the exact same behaviors 90% of the time.

10% of the time, I connect successfully. I'd say the stack is unstable; the keyboard bug shows that testing on this was less than thorough

I suspect that the VPN functionality wasn't fully baked in the release version of the iPhone software. I see three problems with VPN right now (although, I must say I'm very happy that they included VPN at all):
1) VPN Settings does not remember password (The "Ask every time" default text indicates to me that if you leave the field blank, it will ask every time, but if you fill it in, the password should be remembered).
2) Accessing VPN password field from any place other than Settings>General>Network>VPN>Settings gives you the numeric keypad, with no way to switch to an Alpha keypad
3) Connection errors that appear dismiss themselves immediately, so it's virtually impossible to know if your password wasn't recognized or if there was a problem connecting to the VPN server.

One more, but I'm not sure how real a problem this is:
I'm not sure if this is designed this way, but I'm also unable to connect to VPN over the Edge network. It could be my work won't allow it (although how they would know it was the Edge network, I have no idea), or Edge won't allow it, or the iPhone VPN software or the Edge network is choking. If, by Apple or ATT's design, you can't connect to VPN via Edge, it would be nice to get an alert saying it won't work, rather than having the "Connecting..." message spin for a while.

I love that they put VPN on the phone, but it does need a bit of fixing. I hope that they're able fix this, but if bug fixing works the way it it does at my place of employment, they may have larger fish to fry and may not get around to this for a while. Hopefully we can make enough noise to get them to notice...

same symptoms here. I would say that it'll be fixed in an update. At least we'll get updates on the phone! I had VPN connection working with work, but while trying to download my email, I lost the wifi connection, and it switched to Edge. Even though it said VPN was still connected. However, no email was fetched, either in wifi mode or edge mode.

Has anyone gotten any data to pass once you've made a VPN connection? It's not like you can use ssh or anything like that, so I'm guessing download of email it the only thing you can do other than surf internal web sites.

I've sent data over VPN in both wifi and edge mode but I can see how the vpn connection would break if you get switched from one to the other since your ip address would probably be different

Glad to see I'm not the only who's having problems with the VPN password, though wish we weren't. Here's to hoping apple fixes this in an update soon.

I tried again with todays 1.0.1 iPhone update and it appears to be fixed. Many thanks to the iPhone team at Apple for being so prompt!!!
