Charging with USB Power Adapter
Posted: Jul 2, 2007 10:56 AM

My phone does not charge what plugged into an outlet with the USB Power Adaper.

It will only charge when plugged into my iMac's USB port. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Sounds like you might have a bad adapter.

Does your iphone recognize it's plugged in? (display should light up, charging icon should appear in the middle of the screen)

No, my phone doesn't recognize that it's plugged into an outlet. I plug the phone in and it does nothing. I'm going to take it to a Genious.

I have the same problem with the supplied USB power adapter. It won't charge a nano either. There is voltage coming out, though, since my old cell phone recognizes its plugged in, but says "unauthorized charger". Since my iPhone seems to be charging fine via USB from the PowerMac, I'm thinking the adapter is faulty. Hopefully I can simply exchange the adapter.

I took my USB charger block back to the Apple store for an exchange. And aside from avoiding a lecture from the salesperson on the cable differences between other iPods and the iPhone, I got a new charger block. It works great -- I can now charge the iPhone via outlet or through my PowerMac.

(note that lecture about the differences in charges is only there to make sure you spend an additional 49.99 to get a new charger and cable). Apple store personnel have always used this scare tactic since they first opened the retail stores.

Hi,
I just got my phone the other day adn I'm having the same problem. I can charge it with my computer but not with the USB adapter. Are there any other suggestions to why this might be happening? Seems wierd that that many people could have bad adapters already.
Thanks,
Joe

Same issue here. The adapter that was supplied with the iPhone doesn't work, I swapped out cables thinking those might be bad, iphone charges fine when connected to the MBP and also using the "older" school ipod adapter.

Should I just take the adapter back the Apple store and ask for a new one?

Please advise!

I had the same problem...but mine failed over 2-4 days. The Apple store exchanged my power adapter and the new one works fine. I had another iPod USB power adapter that worked fine with the iPhone as well. It sounds like there is a bad batch of them out there that were shipped with the phones.

My power brick now works only about half the time, the rest of the time the phone doesn't think it's plugged in and it doesn't charge. I tried different cords, etc., and everything works fine when plugged into the computer. So it's the brick that's no good. Took it into the Apple store and of course it worked there. But rather than just giving me a new one, he insisted I have to bring in my cord so he can try to replicate the problem. I told him it didn't matter which cord, but he refused to replace the brick. So I called apple customer care, and they're sending me a new one. No problems, no fuss. Don't know what the genius had up his ***.

My USB Power Adapter stopped working in one week. Apple is supposed to be sending me a new one. I am still waiting. However my wife's iPhone USB Power adapter is working as expected.

Been having trouble with the power adapter since purchase. After the second trip to the Apple Store the Genius replaced the power adapter because he could not get the adapter to work

I got home last night and stuck my iphone into the dock to charge before I went to sleep. However I noticed that when I did this nothing happened. No sounds and no indication that it was charging. It was connected to the power adapter that came with it. I moved the adapter off the power strip that it was on and into a wall socket and still nothing. I was very tired so I just plugged in my ipod power adapter and it worked fine. I got up this morning to investigate more but I have not been able to get it working. I used it yesterday just fine and now all of a sudden it just stops working.

I tried everything, even using a different usb cable that came with my ipod, tried multiple outlets, with/without the dock, and nothing works when using that power adapter. The iphone charges fine when using its own cable and dock if I connect to my PC or use my ipod charger.

Will apple replace this through the mail? I really don't want to have to take a second hour drive down to the apple store for another issue on my $600 phone.

mine worked for like an hour after I bought my iPhone, but now it doesn't. I just charge it through USB on my PS3. I guess I'll call AppleCare and exchange it.
