Part of touch screen failing

I'm having an issue where a strip of the screen about 1/2 inch from the top and 1/2 inch tall all the way across the screen that will not accept input. It ususally does nothing when touched, but will occasionally register a touch with other things on the screen. I've restarted, rebooted and cleaned and nothing seems to help. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Last thing I would try is a restore. If that doesnt work, call Apple tech support. You may have a defective phone.

Try to reposition your fingers, I had same problem but I believe it was operator error.

I had this issue yesterday. What seemed to fix it was a soft reset. Hold down the home button and the poser button until you see the apple. Than restart it a second time, seems to fix it.

Epsnowden, i'm having the EXACT same problem is you, starting last night. hadn't had any problems before then. tried reset, then restoring and it's still doing it.
What's more discouraging is that i took it to the apple store and their solution was for me to send it in for a 3-day repair. Not what i expected to hear after only having it for less than 30 days....

I have the exact same problem on my phone that is not even two weeks old. I have kept it in immaculate condition, this is ********. I have tried ever restart, reboot and update out there and this is ******* ********.

my phone does the same thing. but it happens only like once in awhile where one day the buttons might not work when i press them or they lag really badly. but it happens like maybe once or twice a week.

Same problem for me. Tried reboot then restore; no luck. Sending it back to Apple for repair.

Do you have the 4 gig or 8 gig? And also, do you do a lot of things at the same time. If I remember correctly, the top back side will get warm when listening to music and surfing the internet. I know the screen is based on heat. Just trying to think of reasons for it to fail.

The lower 1/4 inch of my iphone display is non responsive. It is only noticable when sms messaging. The space bar and other two buttons on the bottom of the display won't work. It's hard to text without a space. Reset, restart, and upgraded through iTunes, no change. Version 1.0.1(1C25). Model MA501. I'd rather not send it in for service.

exact same issue here.
working great when i went to bed, woke up and nada... not working at top of screen about 1/2 down from, top. all the way across the screen.
does anyone know if they will replace the item in the store, or do you have to ship off?
for a phone of this price and for the customer service standpoint, you should be able to walk into a store and within five minutes leave with a new one. it's not like the phone is a year old or even months.
apple please help. and keep the great ingenuity at work.

Just clean the screen, reboot, and restore. If the problem doesn't go away you have a dead spot. If it's been more than 30 days you probably won't be able to just walk into a store and get a new phone, but it's always worth calling AppleCare to see if they have any discretion to allow an in store exchange which the genius and manager cannot permit.
Mine's been in for 'repair' since Saturday...which according to AppleCare's rep today means I might see a new one by friday. The genius told me this was the most common problem they had seen. Just call Apple: 1-800-MY-iPHONE (1-800-694-7466).

I had the same problem. The bottom strip of my screen stopped working. I called technical support, they promptly sent me a prepaid box to ship my unit back and a new one arrived within two days. I synchronized and was back up and running in a few minutes.
Here's a very helpful "secret" that nobody else seemed to know about (even the Apple technician)... When you synchronize the iPhone, all information on the phone gets placed on your hard drive in a recovery file. So, when you receive your unit (or an alternate replacement unit) from the repair center, the first synchronization should restore the phone to the exact state it was in at the time of the synchronization. This includes settings and even little details like how far down in your notes had you scrolled. So, the replacement phone that I received became identical to how mine was. Had I known this, I probably wouldn't have struggled to manually type my notes from the iPhone screen onto another computer prior to shipping it off for repair.
Your experience may be different than mine, but I hope the above works for everyone out there as it did for me.
Something else I did was after synchronizing my phone, I then performed a Reset of the phone using iTunes which erased everything on the phone and returned it to the original factory settings. I did this just to avoid sending off a phone with confidential information on it. This didn't seem to interfere with the backup image of my phone already on my desktop computer.
