How to get Chinese and Japanese input in X11?

I have tried a few things like building UIM, Canna, and Anthy, but nothing seems to work. For one thing, I seem able to compile and install the Canna library, but when I run ./configure for UIM, it can't find Canna.
I would like to use Chinese and Japanese input with quite a few X11 applications (e.g. OpenOffice, Zim, and XMMS).
Can somebody walk me through getting Chinese and Japanese input in X11?

Hi SwordAngel,
Sorry I don't know whether building UIM on MacOSX is easy or not, and currently have no time to try it by myself. If you want to use Canna then you may try kinput2 instead of UIM (if I remember correctly there were some people reporting that kinput2+Canna works on MacOSX/X11). Or you may try fink or MacPorts; they may (or may not) have packages (ports) of UIM etc.
Another method (and the method I use) is to use a special version of kinput2 which can work with MacOS native input methods such as Kotoeri (i.e., you don't need Canna nor Anthy). Instructions (in Japanese, sorry) can be found in
http://www.sol.dti.ne.jp/~kikuyan/macosx/x11kotoeri.html
Pre-built binary of this special version of kinput2 (kinput2macim) can be found in
X11_Setting_Script_for_Using_OpenOffice.org_X11_with_IPA_Fonts_Ver.2.0.0
which can be downloaded from http://sourceforge.jp/projects/waooo/files/
This package also contains Japanease TrueType font (IPA font). If you want to install this font as well as kinput2macim, then run one of the script at the top level of the package (the one with "Panther" or "Tiger(PPC)" or "Tiger(Intel)" in the script name). This script will backup and modify your .xinitrc. If you just want kinput2macim then look into the folder "Kinput2".
